The coming years hold some intriguing prospects for virtual instruments. As AI/ML tech becomes increasingly pervasive, we might see changes in the landscape beyond the general use of music generation.
The prospect of AI/ML technology fine-tuning virtual synth settings to suit individual preferences and project themes is particularly interesting. This could streamline workflows and open new doors for sonic exploration.

I'm not going to be original here and say that probably AI is going to be more and more prominent. Plugins based on AI, music based on AI and vocals created with AI are already here and are only going to expand. This will obviously have several advantages as well as a lot of drawbacks. Everyone will be able to create a song with their favourite vocalist so will the musicians be even needed? The AI models sound realistic right now and I'm scared what may happen in the future. At the same time, plugins like iZotope Ozone and Neutron, which implement AI elements, are very helpful in many producers' mixing process and I hope they'll develop even further. I wish AI would go this way - helping us instead of replacing us, but I'm afraid it will be the latter.

Artificial intelligence will have a significant impact on music as we know it. When we first discovered banging two sticks together, music continued to evolve because our innate sense of where it would take us. Aside from those who might take AI as an easy out, a new wave of musicians will find ways to (hopefully) keep the human element thriving in concert with technology...

I have actually noticed a down tick in music the past few years. I suspect that it will start catching up again. I used to get 800 new tracks a week. Now it’s about 650. Probably ramp to about 1000

In the next decade, music will be a multi-sensual experience. It will be amazing, but it will kill traditional acoustic music.

I think that AI will ruin music in the next 10 years or so BUT there will still be talented, original artist who fight back against the cheaters and not so talented.

I think AI is here to stay and could bring a resurrected interest in the crypto and NFT space (both of which have taken a back seat to AI recently).
The Apple VR headset, although expensive right now, will either get cheaper or there will be cheaper options that will make it more accessible to everyone.
Music creators are already thinking of ways to use the headset with music apps (on Mac).
One thing I really enjoy already is how hard drives are getting cheaper. 10 years ago, we paid $1,000 for a 1TB server the size of 3 laptops. Right now, you can get a SSD 1TB hard drive for less than the size of your phone for under $100 (I think I saw a deal for $60 right now for a T5/T7).
Just a few months ago, we were paying $100/TB. Now, I'm saving up for a 4TB for under $250. :)
10 years from now, we can probably get 100TB for $250. 😂
Computers will be faster. Software will have AI integrated. Everything will be cheaper and more accessible.
Let's go!

We will see over the next 10 years both a democratization and decentralization in the music creation community and greater access to productions tools but also significant challenges to copyright, intellectual property, and what it means to be a music creator

Unfortunately, it’s probably heading towards AI. I hope not. My personal feeling is that those “creations” have no soul.

Perhaps the current and future trends are mot as important as the human need to express, to gather, to share, to feel each other. The human need to feel ourselves. Fulfilling these needs is something that music allows us to do. What innovations will allow us to better feel each other through music in the current world ?, may be the better question.

People will embrace new A.I based music until they realize that it's flat and unemotional. Albums will make a huge comeback along with more emphasis on bands. Bands will take over where big labels have failed them. Live performances will become the honeypot for bands. Streaming services will be forced to pay more to bands as bands take back control of their artistry.

I think that MPE is going to continue trending, and device manufacturers will continue creating innovative ways for musicians to express themselves and bring digital instruments to life. Even a traditionally expressive instrument like Piano will have new methods of expression through digital adoption.
That being said, I fear that the adoption of “real world” instruments will fade with time, as technology and the tools they provide will simply make it “easier” to create music. This would be akin to Digital DJing, where the technology can technically do all the mixing for you at a fundamental level - it’s the artists’ creativity and what they do with that technology that makes them stand out today. I just hope that it gives musicians pause to think about what it takes to play that music on the original instruments, so that they don’t become another lost art.

For years, music has been controlled and commoditized by major labels and streaming services. The revenues for musicians and producers are negligible relative to the investments made in both hardware and software to produce music. There has also been a stagnation in the quality of music with “samples” replacing actual music creation from the process of chasing revenues by reducing music creation to cut and paste methods with desktop DAWs. I feel at some point this ecosystem will switch to a new distribution system via a P2P network that will use a blockchain protection allowing a fairer trade between the artist and end user/listener. I don’t feel AI will take over as there is no muse in a coded set of rules that performs similar operations contrary to all the hype. Maybe at some point when processing has a neural ability near a human capacity to think for which we are many years away from at this point, there will be another shift. Hopefully to also benefit musicians and producers for their efforts. People will vote with their dollars.

The music world is poised to embark on an exhilarating journey over the next decade, where technological advancements, creative collaborations, and diverse cultural influences will shape a vibrant and transformative landscape. From cutting-edge AI-generated compositions to immersive virtual reality concerts, and from genre-blending fusions to a resurgence of live experiences, the next decade promises to push boundaries, amplify inclusivity, and revolutionize the way we create, consume, and experience music.
