Another KONTAKT get-together is around the corner. Run by the KSP wizard @EvilDragon himself, our next livestream will be joined by a VP of Product Management Christian Wachsmuth. Christian's experience with the iconic sampling platform spans many years. Starting as a sound designer on the KONTAKT 3 Factory Library, he moved on to take on a series of roles, from a QA on the KONTAKT platform team, a Project Manager of the KONTAKT Instruments team, to the director of KOMPLETE division, and now a VP of Product Management at Native Instruments. If there's one person who can talk about the history of KONTAKT, it's definitely Christian.

Would be amazing if the Komplete Kontrol and Kontakt would just scale sufficiently across different screens - it’s weird that in 2023 I’m having to strain my eyes to look at loads of detail in a tiny UI

Can we please get more options for reordering the browser list in both Kontakt and Komplete Kontrol? I've never understood why there isn't an Alphabetical order option, or a more sophisticated way of grouping instrument/plugin types. At last count, I've got 116 instrument libraries in Kontakt and 194 inside Komplete Kontrol. The default ordering of the browser lists is unwieldy and makes no sense, forcing us to endlessly hunt for what we want.

I think a huge upgrade would be to make the Kontakt sampler much more user-friendly and approachable. Like others have said, the current UI is outdated w tiny fonts and elements that don’t scale up. Revamping the sampler UI to make more accessible its amazing capabilities would be a big benefit for all users and open up the possibility of community-driven sample catalog.

(1) What is the timetable for MPE support 🐙🎹 in Kontakt looking like? It could add so much expression to the existing wealth of orchestral and other deep-sampled instruments, and many more to come.

(2) Could Kontakt please add a 🎲🔀 dice shuffle button to choose a random preset from the current search results? Including any snapshots. This would make it so much better to discover surprises in one's vast library, instead of just going by alphabetical categories. Some NI individual instruments like Lores already have "Randomize preset" in their internal snapshot browsers, so wouldn't it fantastic to expand this to a global level?

I would like to see more synthesis engines added to Kontakt so it can be more competitive with Falcon and Halion, as well as instruments like Arturia’s Augmented series.

I use Kontakt 98% of the time.

For older libraries, I would like to see a feature where Kontakt remembers the library selected AND the specific preset. Now if I want to select another preset in the same instrument/folder, I don't have to go searching for the library and then the subfolder etc. This would be a HUGE improvement to my workflow.

I would also like to see a history button so that we can go back to a previous settings. Right now I have to try some new settings and then close my project without saving and re-open. I know I can create snapshots, but then I have to keep cleaning them out!

Since many users use Kontakt just to load prebuilt instruments, not really profiting of its sampler aspect or own instruments builder, and now we also have Komplete Kontrol, do you have any plans about making NI instruments “independent” from Kontakt (being them built with it or not)?

Second question: any interest on giving to Kontakt more play styles? (I’m thinking granular, reversible live playing (maybe using mod wheel), live playback speed variations, live movable looping points, MPE,…)

My theory is that NI fired most of their programmers and now they don't have anyone to support Absynth, nor will they support a bunch of other software hence why they haven't updated MassiveX, FM8 and other products for a long time. I expect NI will eventually have only two products they support, Kontakt and Maschine, and they'll make all their money by selling sample packs for those products. That's why it's important for the musical community to find other companies to buy music software from, where those other companies won't replicate NI's behavior of shutting off activation servers to prevent people from using older software.

Hello, I have your latest 88 key keyboard and use Kontakt on it's own and within Logic. Would it be possible for you to honour the light guide on my keyboard as dictated by the sample library rather having to use Komplete Kontrol please? I don't want to use KK - I just want to use Kontakt on it's own - thanks!

There are a ton of excellent suggestions here. I look forward to seeing (and hearing) how some of these suggestions ultimately help shape future versions of Kontakt.

While experimenting with myriad libraries in Kontakt, I'm often asked if I want to 'Save change to instrument?'. This occurs even when I haven't made any changes to the libraries I've loaded. Maybe I've loaded a library, played a few notes, and decided to replace the library with a different library.

The extra mouse clicks required to keep getting rid of this 'nag' are quite the workflow killer. This dialog seems to appear inconsistently, and illogicially, often without any relevance to whether there have been changes made that one might wish to save.

Maybe the 'save changes' behavior was changed recently, I'm now finding difficult to reproduce the behavior.

If the 'save changes' behavior hasn't been changed, perhaps users could be offered the option of how 'proactive' it is. I've probably seen that dialog box at least a thousand times, but never once has it saved me from losing any modifications. Seems that it shouldn't ever appear if a library is loaded, then replaced with a different library, then another different library, if no changes have been made to any of the libraries.

Same, I had to multitask and could only listen partially to the conversation, and unfortunately when discussing my specific question, I only heard about half the response, since my session was starting and the client was in the room.

@EvilDragon and @Kaiwan_NI I'm happy to consult/help/dialogue anytime it's needed. I hope you understand the spirit behind my harping on the database/loading issues. It's not that I'm sore you took a beloved feature away, it's not that I need things done MY way...it's that I represent the way a lot of film scorers and veteran Kontakt users (and users of large libraries) use Kontakt. From [what I heard of] today's conversation, it sounds like it's something you're aware of, but it's a distant priority, which worries me a bit. I understand the complex issues behind the new browser and the direction Kontakt is heading, but I can't help feeling like there must be some simpler answers that don't overcomplicate the issue. I'm happy to help brainstorm if you want it. Feel free to reach out.

@EvilDragon I know you and I talked about this some months ago, and you made a suggestion of reorganizing my library into Player and non-Player folders to make it friendlier for Kontakt's new browser. I never actually did this (I'm loathe to do it, since it would break sample paths for hundreds of existing projects, and also it would mess up my existing structures (which are currently by manufacturer and library and now that would have to split). Given the assumption that NI may not have a solution anytime soon, I'll have to go back and find our discussion so I can remember the specific advice and then see if it's something I would actually implement.

I'll reiterate that I've been staying back in K6 because of this very issue. I don't have anything against the new browser, but I can't sugar-coat that you created a significant new problem by removing a feature then replacing it with a different feature that is partially superior, but in major other ways inferior. No one likes it when their favorite software takes steps backwards! :)
