Ask me anything: Kontrol S-Series MK3

Yep, motorized faders are mutually exclusive with studio cats, due to an incompatibility in the firmware. The firmware of the cats, mind you. But I also have the same firmware incompatibility with cats. Maybe one of my ancestors was a motorized fader?
But the good news is, a studio cat is not required for making music. Well, neither is a motorized fader, for that matter. But SOMETIMES, you have to evict the studio cat in order to get any work done. So I hear. I've never had to kick a motorized fader out...but sometimes might need to move the microphones away from them, lol.
I have an allergy to floating cat hairs and dander. And the usual "catitude" too, but the allergy makes it a non-issue. I never ever have to take in a girlfriend's cat, although I will likely survive long enough to empty a litter box in a "catmergency", usually involving cat poop and the good china. If the GF is worth it, that is.
But the cat stays in her place, not mine. "Are you trying to kill me?" is not something you should ever have to ask your girlfriend, lol!

It's all fun and games until somebody loses an eye!

@Matthew_NI Said: "Rest assured, as MK3 is already, it will be sealed against dust and moisture." Bathroom bar bands everywhere will thank you all at NI! 😏
Rats, this forum doesn't have a toilet emoticon!

That's good news for Guy's new S61

Really? Sealed against dust a moisture?
Do any NI products have an IP/IPX rating?

I certainly cannot confirm any specifics, but what I can do is reflect back some of what we're hearing.
With regards to the keyboards, we have heard:
- Standalone embedded products? That could take many forms, endless possibilities
- A and/or M series refresh? That could also take many forms - but users in this AMA have requested 32 or 37 key version of the new MK3, perhaps as a next gen to the M32, or A25. Note: I myself would never condone making another 25 key product. 32 is the minimum viable to me.
- More controllers - perhaps faders and/or pads? Just because such features do not always make sense for this product, perhaps they make sense for other versions.
- Maschine integration. We've explained why we haven't done it, which I do stand by (if you're going to make decisions, own them) but we can always revise or loosen in future.
And of course, beyond the Kontrol series, we have other hardware products that users have asked receive more attention, and/or new versions and/or both. Plus, we have ideas for hardware products unrelated to those we currently make, although those are less likely to see the light of day. The hardware lab is a very fun place. I would snap a pic today, but I'd have to comb through to make sure absolutely nothing confidential is shown :-D

I'm a lover of pretty much all animals. In my time I've kept 17 chickens, 2 sheep, 40,000 bees across 4 hives, multiple cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, not to mention my collection of keyboards that I also pet. And this morning in the Native Instruments office, had the pleasure of being greeted by a friendly dog belonging to one of our colleagues on the instrument side.
That said, I cannot think of a single animal I'd allow near my studio equipment. Including some of my bandmates...

You get me.

I was hoping the seed was being sown for an S37 mk3 - I don't think I'd want to replace my S25 with anything "less".

Great question!
No, we don't rate for that. The keybed would make it rather difficult to achieve such a rating.
What we have done though is introduce the unibody shell, with moulded buttons, so there exists no opening for dust to enter, and it's extremely moisture resistant as well. But we haven't put it forward for rating, nor would claim that level of performance in any official capacity, even if mine still works fine after a glass of water fell...

I'm curious to hear more of your thoughts here.
I hear from both camps of users: 32 is just right, 32 is too few, 37 is just right, 37 is too many.
It tends to come down to use case, of course. Those asking after 32 are keen on something more portable. And those extra 5 keys have a way of no longer fitting cleanly in most backpacks.

Sure - in my case it's more a question of what will fit ergonomically into my home studio set-up than it is about "rucksackability". The S25 fits nicely in the two-and-a-bit feet to the side of my main keyboard and beneath my second monitor. I could probably cram the S49 in there, but only by raising it up to a somewhat awkward height and angle, whereas I think an S37 should fit comfortably into the same space.
I can see why this might be a bit too niche a niche for you to cater to though! I'd be happy-ish with an S32 too, but am guessing the struggle there might be with making the S series controls and innards fit into such a reduced chassis.
Regarding depth, I don't think I'd greatly miss the middle region of the screen to be honest, if it's only ever going to show pictures. I'm really happy with the graphics and information that can be displayed on the Push screen format, just for comparison.
