All NI Native Access downloads blocked by Win 11 security features. What is the answer?

My SSD in a Win 11 Laptop died :-(, so I am now trying to reinstall all my NI and Cubase SW with a new SSD, but Win 11 security somehow blocks internet connection of the Native Access App:

"Cannot connect to the internet. PLease check your connection settings or disable your VPN."

Cubase's download app brings the same frustrating message.

Apart from a Mac perhaps (?), what is the best fix for this in Win 11? I'm going crazy!

    Is that something to deinstall?

No , if you do not use it then it ought not pose a problem.

Nope nothing to do with SSD or BIOS…

To tell you the truth i don't think that i ever saw a similar issue before, at least not on Windows.

Simply said, this shouldn't happen, ever. But i still believe it is something really simple!

So, please do this simple check:

Go to Settings -> Network & internet -> under Properties at the top of the page, does it say
    Private? Or Public?

If it's Public, then it is wrong! It's your home.
Change it to Private, restart, and try again.

Note: For things to work, please remember to do all changes, suggestions etc. as administrator, not as a simple user.

If the above solution is not the case, then try those tips (not all at once! If 1st solution fails, only then go to the next one):

    1. Reset Network

    • Search for Command Prompt, and open it (run it as administrator).
    • In the command box, enter the following commands (one by one, after each line is completed then enter the next one)
       ipconfig /release

       ipconfig /renew

       ipconfig /flushdns

       ipconfig /registerdns

       netsh int ip reset

       netsh winsock reset

       netsh winhttp reset proxy

    • Restart the computer to see if the problem is solved.

    2. Disable and Re-enable Network Adapter:

    • Right-click on the network icon in the system tray and select "Network & Internet settings > "Advanced Network Settings > More Network Adapter Options.
    • Right-click on your Ethernet connection, and select "Disable." Wait for a few seconds and then enable it again.

    3. Network Adapter Settings:

    • Right-click on the network icon in the system tray and select "Network & Internet settings > "Advanced Network Settings > More Network Adapter Options.
    • Right-click on your Ethernet or Wi-Fi (or both, one by one) connection and select "Properties."
    • Make sure that "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" is enabled and set to obtain an IP address automatically.

The apps are certainly ok, they are being blocked by win 11. I tried disabling the firewall and the anti-virus app in win11 but got the same message.

The only way for this to be happened is if you manually adjusted the "security" level to an insane/paranoid degree.

Please reset your security software (and tell us which one it is!) to their default / recommended settings. Unless you are a super-secret spy organization or a hi-tech multinational corporation, the default / recommended settings are more than enough! ☺️

Win 11 VPN is also deactivated….. a mystery. I was hoping NI and/or Steinberg Cubase may have a nice answer.

You can find detailed information and possibly a way to fix your issue on this article:

Thanks for the suggestion but that is where I have already been to find an answer ( the german version…. ). I tried using an ethernet cable connection (internet worked for my browser etc but no luck with the installer sw), I will still try the access point option with my iPad or iPhone to try and overcome the blocking of an internet connection for the download.

@Sunborn, I installed win 11 fresh this morning and assume all the security measures are default status, I changed nothing there. That there is such a reaction to download assisting software of both NI and Steinberg is strange, other internet use is not affected. I got half way through NI Download in one attempt, but then the system crashed the process. I'll certainly report the solution when I find one!

VPN programs can often cause problems.

I would try uninstalling the VPN and then using TCP optimizer and click "reset defaults", then restart the computer.

@Heisenberg. I don't use VPN but notice there is a VPN option in Win 11. Is that something to deinstall?

Still no breakthrough on this topic yet. I am in a discussion with Steinberg concerning the same problem I have installing Cubase 14 Elements. It seems to me Windows 11 may have some problematic issue as everything worked fine using Windows 10 on the same laptop with the old (now replaced) defunct SSD. Either that or both NI and Steinberg need to release me from any licensing attachment to the old SSD.

Do you have access to Local Group Policy Editor?

You should, if you have Win 11 Pro, Education or Enterprise edition.

    If so, try this:

    • Open the Run window by pressing Win + R, and type gpedit.msc.
    • On the left panel, expand the folders to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Attachment Manager.
    • On the right panel, open the "Do not preserve zone information in file attachments" policy.
    • Select the Enable setting and click OK.

Restart and check if problem solved.

Note: This is not a fixed solution but just an idea of mine, based on my own experience. It might work, it might not.

I tried your gpedit.msc option but it didn't work unfortunately. It seems like the NI Software is tagged to the defunct SSD or BIOS or something.

Ah, now I understand, I thought you had a VPN installed but not active, then everything is fine, because VPNs can sometimes mess around with the Network stack.
