Komplete 14 installation on brand-new Mac: Installation failed

Trying to install Komplete 14 on a new M1-based Mac. I'm with NI since decades, but never had such a miserable on-boarding:

Native Access 2 installed successfully on the builtin hard drive. Since I don't have enough space, before installing anything else I opened 'Preferences' and chose custom paths for downloads and content (on an external MacOS-formatted drive, if that matters…):

/dev/disk4s1 on /Volumes/T7 (hfs, local, nodev, nosuid, journaled, noowners)

Trying to install any product results in 'Installation failed'. What can I do? Are there log files written anywhere?
