I have to say the greatest solo of all time would be on the song no More tears by Ozzy Osbourne. Performed by Zakk Wylde.

What's happening here? Steve Vai goes Wes Montgomery? Yes he does, but within a few minutes he explodes like a devil. This is the ultimate mix between unbelievable virtuoso and ultimate emotion. I've played this video a thousand times, but still I get shivers down my spine. In this performance it's very clear that Vai is in love with himself. Such a cool dude (look at 3:08 where he cams his hair -:) But we forgive him, because he's such a great, unique guitargod. A lifechanging piece of music for every guitar player. Enjoy!

Jimi Hendrix - the greatest solo of all time must be his solo taken from a blues jam at the Newport pop festival 1969. He made the guitar sing.

There are some great ideas above. Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin I definitely appreciate. But, there's one guitar solo that I think goes well and beyond all these suggestions. And, it's not the song... it's the performance. I've seen some amazing guitar players live... even met many bands (worked in broadcasting). But, this human being is the greatest I have ever witnessed.

Three guitar parts played simultaneously on a single guitar... this is Stanley Jordan. To see this live changes what you understand is possible from a single instrument. Here he is playing Eleanor Rigby

And, here he is doing this in '86. He's been around for a while.

Have a safe day all. And, if you've never heard of Stanley Jordan before now, your welcome.

+ 1 for Pink Floyd, Another Brick In The Wall.

It’s surprisingly hard to think if just one ‘Best’ solo, so many amazing guitarists, but many Floyd solos stir something special, I agree with others, I think it’s the tone.

There are technically better and more challenging solos. There are solos I prefer to this. There are live performances by people like Garry Moore (RIP), Knopfler, Gilmour and others that trump Page’s. But credence to Page for performing the song with a twin necked SG monster – and moving so seamlessly between necks.

The count of people teaching this solo on YouTube is huge. AND – it takes something for the playing of the song and its solo to still be banned in the majority of guitar shops. All that almost 50 years since the song was released. Those are the sort of things that define an icon. So it has to be the ”Stairway to Heaven.” solo.

Actually two guitar solos. I hope this still counts!

Frank Zappa and a very young Steve Vai - Stevie's Spanking (live in Rome, 1982):

I think any of Zappa's solos can fall into the 'iconic' category but this one is a real treat. All his solos tend to have a real progression to them even though they often go on for 10 mins+. Not just noodling for the sake of noodling, they all tell a story and this is no exception. But this also has the added bonus of Steve Via playing alongside him. I never get tired of watching this!
