S4 Mk3 problem: playback slowdown, freezing, crashing..

Hello everyone!

I've been using an S4 Mk3 controller almost from the beginning, but unfortunately, it hasn't been working well with the Traktor software for some time now. Currently, I’m using version Pro v4.2.0 build 36. At illogical intervals, either playback slows down and the sound becomes distorted, or the sound suddenly cuts out, or—worst of all—the software crashes completely, accompanied by a sound effect as if I had activated a 1/8 loop on the track.

These issues have been happening for quite a while now (over a year), but I assumed the problem was on my end or at the venues where I perform. I thought the S4 Mk3 might be sensitive to voltage fluctuations, so I bought an APC voltage-regulated power strip and even a new power adapter for the S4 Mk3. Then last weekend, I came here and searched for "S4 Mk3 crash"...

Well, I was quite surprised to see that I’m not alone—many others have experienced the same issues. Previously, I used a Numark 4Trak, which I never sold and has been resting in its original box in like-new condition since I bought the S4 Mk3 when it was first released.

Since I read that others had the same experience, I started testing to rule out a few things and to figure out whether the problem is software-related or with my S4 Mk3 itself.

I took out the 4Trak and swapped it with the S4 Mk3. I left it playing continuously for 24 hours, and no problems occurred during that time. After that—having read that version 3.4 was one of the most stable—I decided to install it on my laptop and test it with the S4 Mk3. Interestingly, with version 3.4.2 build 256, playback ran for nearly 24 hours without a single issue!

I closed the program and reopened version 4.2.0 build 36 and set the S4 Mk3 to auto-play again. I left it running and checked it two hours later… and the issue had already resurfaced: the music slowed down and the sound became sluggish and distorted.

So I believe the problem isn't with the S4 Mk3 controller itself, but rather with Traktor Pro software—starting from version 3.8 and onwards.

Since I play 99.9% original audio recordings—many of which are Hi-Res audio files (96kHz/24bit)—my audio settings are:
Sample Rate: 96000kHz, Buffer Size: 512, and USB Buffer: 3ms.

I tested the S4 Mk3 with versions 4.2.0 build 36 and 4.0.2 build 13 using all available sample rates (44.1/48/88.2/96kHz), but in every case, one of the problems would appear after 1–2 hours.

It’s concerning that one of NI's flagship products (the S4 Mk3) cannot work properly with the latest Traktor Pro software, while the 4Trak—which hasn’t been updated in ages—functions flawlessly… :/

I’ve attached screenshots from the LatencyMon software.

System Configuration:

Operating system: Windows 11 Pro v24H2

Notebook: Lenovo Legion 5 17ACH6
Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 5800H with NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050
Memory: DDR4-3200 (32GB RAM)
System partition SSD – Kingston SA2000M81000G (1TB)
Data partition SSD – Samsung MZ7LH7T6HMLA-00005 (7.68TB)

I kindly ask the support team to resolve this issue within a reasonable timeframe, as I’m unable to take full advantage of either the S4 Mk3’s capabilities or those of the new software.

Thank you!

Respectfully!

I have the same laptop Lenovo and the same Traktor problems. Latency 512 usb buffer 3ms, asio drivers from Ni site every process off on windows 11. On older ver of traktor 3.9 latency was 256 usb buffer 3ms and everything works flawlesly, even when web browser was running. Can someone help us with this issue ?

Something has gone badly wrong with Traktor 4 in regards to latency and that nasty audio freeze traktor crash, before I ran 192ms as a "safe" setting now in T4 256 is not safe and everyone seems to be running 512ms on Traktor Kontrol units..

I have spun over 200 pro gigs on traktor in the past decade and finally needed to bite the bullet and get CDJs as it's just not safe for pro and seems to be getting worse

    Dear NI,

Could I kindly request a response or a statement regarding the issue that I and many of my fellow users are experiencing?

The facts: A new software (Pro 4) has been launched, but it does not function properly with one of NI’s own flagship devices.

We would appreciate a reply addressing what steps you are taking to resolve this issue, as you have already earned our trust — we have purchased both the controller and the new Pro 4 software.

    Respectfully,

    Hello

I had the same Problem with a Lenovo Thinkpad i7 Laptop.

There was no solution for the problem. I was able to stabilize the processor clock speed using the throttlestop program. But that's not the solution for such an expensive laptop. I switched to Razer and haven't had any problems since.

    Best regards

    Hi!

You probably didn’t read, or only skimmed through, the story that started the post..

In the past year I have noticed some Windows processes and changes. I have 2 Lenovo laptops that lately have ran into issues running OBS streaming software. They worked fine up until a month or 2 ago.

This might not be related since every PC is different and even a driver or a process from another software can impact performance.

But I used task manager to eliminate a few processes that I never had issues with before.

    Phone Link

    Print Spooler

    Any gaming services.

I also uninstalled any programs I wasn't using.

    One drive

    Excel

    Various gaming stuff.

Now I am back to low CPU usage on the Lenovos for streaming and video cards. Traktor doesn't ever get used live with a controller on these laptops.

As for my Traktor computer. With S4mk3. I don't use the higher bitrate. There are opinions out there. That most the time it isn't as good as you might think. But also that you should set the internal soundcard to the same bitrate that you use for streaming and Traktor. (I don't know how legitimate all that is, but worth a try.)

The Traktor laptop is an Asus Rog from 2021 very high specifications. As of Traktor 4.0 and above and the aforementioned strange new Windows processes.

I now have to use task manager to kill some processes to get a good even CPU usage.

    Phone link

    Print Spooler

    Gaming stuff.

I also use a Track ID service for streaming that causes some CPU usage. But I get away with 48khz and 256 with a 3ms buffer.

Also I use a 3rd party software called Process Lasso and have set CPU affinity according to results from Latency Mon. But that takes a bit of troubleshooting.

I don't bother with any high quality and higher bitrates since most my DJing is either YouTube Streaming (and limited in quality anyway) or over basic house /pool /backyard systems that a person would never hear that quality anyway.

I have had to adjust my son's Ableton production desktop over the last year as well. It ran fine for a year or so but after Windows updates has needed some optimizing. My Asus also is used in audio production with Ableton. And had the same increase in CPU usage. The same settings that fixed Traktor worked on all of the computers.

    Hp desktop.

    Asus Rog laptop

    Both (low specs) Lenovo laptops.

Keep in mind the support team isn't active in the forum. Support from the forum is usually members giving advice. To get help from support you need to contact support through the main website.

I have been using Traktor for over a decade now and most of the time software issues are resolved through Windows settings, and not by an update.

There is no way for any software company to keep every computer configuration and changes working. (I know that sounds mean). Sorry

I had a Dell G7 about 6 years ago I bought it in about 2016. It was about $2000usd. And suppose to be one of the best. It took me 3 years to find out the Support Software was what caused Traktor to spike (dpc latency issue). It was usable but I had to be careful with loops and heavy effects or all 4 decks playing. Once I uninstalled the support software it ran smooth.

Hopefully some of my suggestions above can help. You might have a completely different issue and without sitting down and troubleshooting in your chair I am very limited in understanding.

4.2 is disgrace to Traktor, it crashes on every gig. I'm doing very big festival stage soon, honestly thinking about selling S4 MK3 and going Serato route. I used S2 MK3 for years on Traktor 3 and rarely had problems except it was outdated software. Since I bought S4 it's only problem after problem.
