MPC 3.0 How will NI respond?

We know that NI has been working on a maschine update, but is it too late for them to catch up to the progress that AKAI has made within the last few years? This is the question I asked myself when the MPC 3.0 Firmware update was announced this morning.

It features:

  • A UI overhaul
  • New mixer
  • An arrangement mode
  • Disk Streaming
  • Workflow Improvements

    Let's talk about it.

Bear in Mind even before the MPC 3.0 they were already needing to play catch up with features that the MPC have.

  • Stem Seperation
  • Key detection
  • Tuner
  • Realtime Time Stretch
  • Warping (after chopping, and NO, audio plugin does not do the same thing)
  • Track/Pad Muting
  • Sampler flexibility (Stereo>mono, gain change, extract, etc)
  • MP3 Compatibility

    My Maschine+ is arriving today.

I have to say this update took the wind out of my sails a little bit, but after much deliberation, Maschine still seems like it will be a faster workflow for me, which is important as I don't have a ton of time for making music.

I've tried the MPCs before and this fixes a lot of the things I didn't like about them. Maschine still seems to have a better workflow, hopefully they actually deliver Maschine 3 by the end of the year.

They'll drag their feet and "the end of this year" will become "sometime at the beginning of 2025", will become "summer 2025". will ultimately lead to the announcement that Maschine is EOL. :P

Then they'll hire a hoard of DJs from some discord server to flood the board with toxic positivity & pretend everything is fine.

IMO its not M+ vs. MPC but M+ and MPC. Both ecosystems have their advantages and some big flaws.

BTW loopop who mostly provides relatively unemotional and calm reviews has already published an explanation of MPC 3 features:

We will see how long it takes to get a stable and usable MPC3 / Maschine 3 FW from inMusic/Akai and NI.

The workflow on maschine is still amazing! The fastest workflow in the game period.

Update the arrangement section, editing of midi, clips /audio feature needs to be current its a bit outdated.

Akai is cool but it's not Native instruments, remember its a groove box not a full daw.

Wow, and you can get a MPC One + for pretty cheap. Color is hideous but the work flow and features look so well polished. It looks so easy to produce and finish something on there. I may have to snag one.

I think the next firmware update will be modest but impactful for me if I can start using my Motu interfaces with M+. I don’t believe M3 will compare to the Akai improvements but it doesn’t have two go toe to toe for me, I’d settle for Aftertouch and a few limitations lifted.

I wouldn’t be too bothered by it since Maschine is supposedly also getting a refresh this year, and these updates are really just bringing conveniences at this point. Truthfully, it would be more exciting to get new devices at this point than new software, but these companies want everyone paying subscriptions for watered down DAWs and sample packs rather than building insulated hardware platforms with ever increasing power under the hood (like they all used to do back in the day).

I agree with you except the hardware part. They seem to be focusing too much on plug-ins and sample libraries, which are basically commodities at this point. It would be great if they just took their best stuff onto a new Maschine MK4 platform. Roland has pulled this off several times in its history, but I don’t think NI has the institutional knowledge to navigate this changing business environment. They are clearly stuck in their ways and resource-constrained as a result of the recent layoffs.
