Kontrol Z2 and Technics. What software do I need?

Hey everyone.

I got hit with some massive nostalgia this week, so I decided to dig out my old 1210s and Kontrol Z2. I have a new laptop now and so I need to get some Traktor software to use with it.

I have an Intel MacBook Pro. I remember I think I had Traktor 2 but it looked dreadful on my retina screen. Traktor DJ2 doesn't seem to work on decks from what I've read?

As a casual who doesn't need all fancy filters and effects what's the best software for me to use? I probably have an old instal file of Traktor 2 I could use if needed, does NI issue updates at all?

Thanks

Adam

With the Q3 feature roadmap NI stated that a High-DPI/Retina-Browser panel is in research for the future. Unfortunately the roadmap didn’t got an update for Q4. We can only guess if there is any progress. But as the release notes of the current beta version clarify there are almost only some fixes and additions for the new X1 Mk3.

Traktor DJ 2 is pretty much dead. No updates for some time. Once it should be the base for the next Traktor Pro but not anymore. Traktor DJ 2 never supported DVS - which is needed if you want to use scratch control with your 1210s.

Which version of macOS are you running? Traktor Pro 2 has been replaced by Traktor Pro 3 more than five years ago right now. If you are running a modern version of macOS on your MacBook Pro I would suggest using a more modern version of Traktor Pro. The license is on offer at this time: Traktor Pro 3 is currently just 49€, an update from Traktor Pro 2 is only 24.50€.

There are no updates to Traktor Pro 2 anymore. Only if you are using a very old version of macOS you should use Traktor Pro 2. You can download Traktor Pro for older OS versions from NI: https://support.native-instruments.com/hc/de/articles/210294645-Traktor-Pro-Installationsdateien-f%C3%BCr-%C3%A4ltere-Betriebssysteme

Sorry but Google presented me the german Support-Sites.

Just don't use fancy features you don't need. You need Traktor Pro 3 (or Traktor Scratch Pro 2) for DVS control with your turntables.

Thanks for the reply and info. My macOS is the very latest version. Does Pro 3 have retina support? The images on the website are still super blurred they look like Pro 2 was. Not a game changer but it's 2023 and MacBooks have had retina screens for 10+ years now.

Can I not use the DJ2 software? That's clean and simple but I cannot seem to find much help for support. I don't mind getting Pro 3 but it looks complicated and a bit overkill for my needs.

Okay, thank you. Super useful. I assumed since DJ2 was retina-supported Pro3 would be but cest La vie. I'll get Pro 3 and cross fingers for an update. It's really not that hard to support retina but I guess it's not a priority.

Now I just have to remember how the Z2 works 😃

If you don't want to use Traktor, you can check out mixxx, it's free and open source.

Or you can take a look at Algoriddim Djay or Virtual DJ. Some of them should support your Z2.

Thanks. I'm finding my feet again with Traktor. I found my old serial for the software I had so using that. Think it was Traktor 2. Songs won't sync though, annoyingly so trying to work through that now. Probably something stupid I've done.
