Hum.. Well, even I am getting confused, OP meant "Sound" as the terminology used by Maschine's Browser separation and functionality; outside of that, a Sound can literally be anything...

It's just different needs, it doesn't matter if it's a Synth, Internal Module, Sample, Plugin, etc...

Many synths/plugs/etc have no internal FX or maybe one just prefers their own FX and as a sound designer the FX can be an integral part of a preset, all DAW's have ways of saving the full chain+instrument for later; some people use it some do not. How many pre-made presets one has is irrelevant if you're into programing your own stuff.

    Indeed your rationale is correct.

However, it is custom that when we say "sound" it means audio. Presets are not actual sound, they are settings for a specific instrument or effect.

So, in our case, when the OP wrote "Poly Synth" and while he indeed mentioned "sound", the mind (at least mine) immediately translate it as "preset", also because at his first comment he didn't mention anything about "export with FX". He did it in the second comment, and obviously i also didn't pay enough attention to it too.

Thus the misunderstanding, from my part at least. :-)

Yeah, I guess. This is on NI, using a generic word like that for your own SW idiom terminology is never a good idea... then again naming things is probably not an easy task.

The important thing is that even though I made it clear (especially in the second post) that I was talking about saving a sound in the context of ...saving a "sound" and using the conceit of NI in the usage of the term, there seems to be those who use the terms interchangeably. But, NI does not, in the sense of saving and file naming i.e. (.msnd) That being said, it's neither here nor there what the semantics of sound vs preset is in the context I raised it, as I was being literal by NI standards. You are both right in that, as Sunborn states, a preset is normally designated for a particular synth and it's parameters. Which is a very specific thing indeed. But I guess it's also true that a sound can be a preset because you could save a sound with just the preset and no additional facts - although I'm not sure why anyone would want to do that 🤔 Thanks for all your input on the matter 🙂

Actually the dialogue box is different between presets and sounds and the file naming is different as well. One is saved as a sound file (.mxsnd) and the other is a preset saved within an individual synth. No worries. I got it figured out. But I can see why people use the words interchangeably. I was specific about saving an NI sound in my second post - not a preset - which is much different. But thanks for your input 👍🏼
