SSD edition (SKU) possible with Komplete 16?

NA does actually recognise an external drive. I can plug a K13 drive into the computer, NA will see it and use the base product from the drive before downloading updates.

Having said that, I still don't think they're likely to always provide a drive like they used to. Possibly as an additional option like other companies do, but I can't really see it happening.

    What an essay.

Obiously disagree. People who can afford Komplete Ultimate or Collector's may use multiple machines (one production and one test machine, maybe a travel computer too) and may make clean installs of computers too. When the total bundle crosses a terabyte it may be time to offer an SSD again.

Internet connection is limited by what NI's servers allow.

A HDD is going to give more consistent speeds than a 1G internet connection, and without the need to write over 1TB of temporary files onto your device.

It's also a lot faster to install from that HDD and update than via downloading everything over again on a new machine (or if you have to reset the machine). The issue is that they'd basically need 2TB drives for Collector's Edition, at this point.

The costs will be passed onto you, and likely at a rate that allows them to rake in margins from it.

I still think it's not worth it if you have a good internet connection. Just let the PC install overnight and call it a day.

But there should be an option to retain the downloaded files. As annoying as IK Multimedia is, hte fact tha tyou can just back up to Content Directory and install it at the speed of "copy this folder to another computer" from that backup is a huge plus for their products.

Native stopped the practice of making hard drive installers back when they were a German company, and before they were acquired. And they haven't restarted the practice, so I think that tells us all we need to know.

Sure, I'd like to see an SSD installer. Or an NI "keep downloads" option. I just don't think it's going to happen. And I don't want the development team to be working on these things when there's so much else we want/need them to work on, especially with Komplete Kontrol.

+1 for "keep downloads" - that'd make installing on different systems and reinstalling a LOT better. The other thing I'd like, which again probably won't happen) is to let NA install expansions to Maschine+ rather than having to download them via the onboard internet. Like connect the M+ via USB and let NA write the expansions to the SD card. I'm sure that'd be faster than the time it takes to install all the expansions via WiFi

    Somebody's been busy voting posts down… 🤔

@mykejb the SD card idea might work, but I suspect some of the installation has to write to the internal storage area where the OS lives (which is locked off).

Yep I think you're right, but if NA has the USB connection to the M+ it could write those extra bits to the internal memory I guess. I'm not sure if doing a factory reset on an M+ invalidates everything you have on the SD drive. I should really try it and hope I don't have to leave it for a day to reinstall everything again!!

And yep, MLARS seems to have an itchy downvote finger if anyone disagrees with him/her!

There’s simply one problem with “keep downloads”:

    They don’t want.

In the same way that they stopped having the installers downloadable from the site repository.

Otherwise how could they decide what you can still install and what not at their will?

The whole Native Access concept turns around that. You can have only what they decide you can have.

Even if you paid for it

You're probably not wrong about "keep downloads", or about the reasons behind it.

    That's how everything works.

From your bank to Netflix or your movie library on Amazon Prime, to your utility payments (including your smartphone payment), to your local ISP, anybody can shut you off from electronic commerce at anytime.

They did it to the truckers in Canada. Just make 'em persona non grata at their bank, and then they can't even pay the note on the truck, let alone put fuel in the tanks, or even to get cash out of an ATM so you can buy food. To fill a big rig's tanks, it's probably over $1,000…not a petty cash amount you'd be carrying around in your back pocket, so that's going to be some kind of a credit or debit charge.

Some banks have also decided that people shouldn't be allowed to buy this or that, and some have even tried to use retail codes to allow them to kill a transaction for the customer buying one of those things the bank has decided you shouldn't be able to own…even though it's legal and is even a protected right.

Well, I haven't checked it currently, but in past it was possible to "catch" downloaded installation files. So, if one really wants, it is possible to get installation files. But yes, it is not brought on silver plate and needs certain effort. I have used it to install plugins on OS versions that were not officially supported by NI, but which has worked just fine. I have downloaded installer on computer that was supported and then installed on unsupported OS.

I tried exactly this a few months ago. Yes, when we had "Service Center", you could catch the downloaded install files. But when I tried it just recently with Native Access, nothing would even show up in my "downloads" directory as spelled out in the NA preferences. I even tried pausing the download. The only thing I haven't yet tried was to stop the installer task (I think it's called "Aria2.exe" or something like that) in Windows.

I figured if I get bored being on zombie watch one of these days, maybe I'll do some more digging…but really it's summertime and I'd rather be sipping lemonaide or bellyflopping in my pool. 😎

It used to be possible in Native Access in Win for sure. Still about year ago, when I needed install for Traktor. But it might happen that it has become different since then.

The secret was (is) waiting for the end of download and copying the file while NA is doing the “install” phase (and before this ends)

I have tested this over my last 2 or 3 installs - and it seems that a typical ISO now brings along a "hidden" flag to the party.

In my specific download location - which is being monitored all the while watching an install roll by - I can no longer see the ISO payload - so copying it before the install is complete is no longer an option.

I have not tried a few other tools I have here to expose all hidden files - but I will try this for my next install session.

    Thank you for the info.

Well… if NI is trying to block also this way… it is just (once again) a sad (and poor) move…

And another proof that when they try to tell us “we elaborated the Native Access way to install things to facilitate users”… it is just a lie… what they are doing is trying to have all the decisions in their hands: what you can or cannot install, if you can use the things you paid for, if they are the “masters of the universe” or not,…

Even providing Komplete on hard disk or not is not a matter of “costs” or “with nowadays fast connections it is not necessary anymore”… it is just a move to be in control of everything…
