Storing komplete library

What are some of the best external drive options to store my Komplete 15 stantard library on for performance? I have a 2015 macbook pro quad core i7, 16gig, 512 running os Monterey.. I'm using a cheap $35 nvme external drive from teamgroup Gen 3×4 M.2 up to 1700/1400 MB/s.. Is this sufficient, or should I get something higher end?

You should really just try the one you have and see if everything are read and played fast enough within your DAW. What's certain is that you need a minimum of usb-c and up external drive……

Thanks for responding! I have used this drive in Logic Pro, and it seems to drag the CPU quite a bit more than logic instruments, which I expected. I was just thinking I could optimize if I had something running at higher speeds. It's connected via USB-c to the USB-a on my mac. Should I connect via thunderbolt instead?

Did you reformat your external SSD storage as GUID-APFS format?

Yes.. I formated it APFS.. Put the library on the external, everything else's on my Mac.. l don't have a lot of experience using external ssd drives, and I've seen a lot of people talking about more expensive drives like the samsung, or glyph, etc.. I thought if I get one of those there might be a little less drag on my CPU when running third party plug-ins.. especially when I use Kontact!

Your 2015 MacBook Pro has only USB 3.0 ports which limit you to a maximum of 5Gbps transfer speed with external SSD storage per USB port (direct connection) on your MBP.

@victorp.sg is correct here…the limiting factor on your 2015 MBP is going to be the USB port. Well, before everything else, that is.
The CPU throttling could be ANYTHING at this point. I would not blame it on the M.2 SSD that you picked.
Your MBP is 10 years old. That’s the truth and I’m actually surprised that your OS meets the minimum requirement for Komplete, so that’s a blessing. This will be difficult to hear, but you’d be well advised to start saving for a new MBP. If you shoot for a purchase date of 2026 or 2027, you might be able to get into an M5 or M6 chip and use THAT one for the next 10-12 years.
Good luck!
