Be very careful about older projects especially if they contain any of the older Kontakt instances.

For the bulk of all DAWs out there (except for Cubase and Logic) Kontakt 8 will not replace older instances automatically.

If you dump the older Kontakt versions - you will be fixing things manually

Hi guys, recently moved to a Macbook Air M4 from an old intel 2015 and Komplete 11. With the uprade I still have Kontakt 5 and the newer 6 and 7 as well as ofcourse the 8. 1st. question: does Kontakt 8 have all the same sounds as 5,6 and7 but say in an updated or improved version in some cases? The reason I am asking is if to see if I should uninstall the previous ones. I understand that if I remove the previous ones on which my tracks were made, opening the previous projects will not open those sounds right?

    My point of view

Kontakt 5 is: archaic, obsolete, useless. Period.

I really don't understand how is possible to still exists on computers who run Kontakt 7 & 8

Really, there is no purpose at all… even for the old libraries, modern Kontakts can read them fine.

It shouldn't even exist on Native Access, as an option.

It really, really makes things more complex that they should be, without any reason at all!

And in general, having 3 versions of the same thing (especially if their distance is over a decade!) is not a good thing at all, for a number of very good reasons…

Note: I am talking about the application, not about the libraries! Yes, most stuff on them will be a duplicate, but you can still find some good, forgotten presets that didn't make it to the next version.

So, you can keep the libraries, if you believe that few presets and sounds can justify the existence of, at least 2 dozen GB of duplicate material! 😋

If you have an old project from 7 years ago that used K5 - there will be no getting into that instance without K5 installed. Regardless of any newer versions present.

well… personally, if i had an old project from years ago that used K5, i would already updated it, years ago, when K6 arrived! 😉

Why do people write this tosh?

I'm sure I'm not the only one using Kontakt 5 every day. I guess I'm more interested in making music than in shiny new toys. And I don't have any of the problems, complaints of which have pretty much taken over this forum.

I tend to update when I see something that I want/need/might be useful. Haven't seen anything so far.

FYI, Auto migration is only possible for a few DAWs, Logic, Maschine, Cubase: Notes about Auto-Migration of Kontakt Versions in DAW Projects
