It’s not just 4K, it’s any resolution above 2560x1440 - I used to have super ultrawide 5120x1440 monitor and NI plugins in native resolution were the size of a post stamp.

There has been 2 or 3 generations of 5K2K (5120x2160) monitors already (from Dell and LG and others), same with 5K (Apple, ASUS, LG) and recently 6K (Apple, Dell, ASUS). Last CES was all about HiDPI high refresh rate monitors.

Maybe not you guys, but people are buying those in western countries and the demand is there. I remember similar discussions when 4K TVs showed up, lots of people were saying that Full HD was enough and look where we are now 😜

As for required GPU power to drive those monitors - I don’t know about PCs, but £500 Mac Mini can drive 6K display without breaking a sweat.

And a more general reflection, why is it so that I hear from some of you about the prices of those monitors so much? Yes, they are more costly and some (Apple, ASUS) are really expensive. Do you not value your eyes? We all spend countless hours in front of those displays daily, shouldn’t we think about eye comfort and not about the cheapest possible solution only?

I looked at the curved monitors a while back. For gaming would probably have been ok, but for development and graphics applications that have straight lines I found the image looked wrong the further you looked towards the edges.

Agree. There are however two types of displays from Apple - the Pro is expensive without quotation marks. The Studio is cheaper in comparison.

My current 5K Ultrawide is cheaper (and better price/performance IMO). :)

After spending close to £4000 on my new studio monitors last year, I find £1500 for Apple Studio Display refreshingly humble expense in comparison 🤣🤣🤣

Recent ASUS ProArt 5K costs half of that and is nearly as good, so there are options there for various budgets.

It feels like it is made to be paired with the Mac Studio (maybe more for music than video production). Would be nice if the next Studio display has better specs (some of the reviews were not great).

Next ASD is supposed to be MiniLED with higher refresh rate and to be released by the end of 2025, according to rumours.

    You have two displays.

Curved ultrawide is your "workbench" for sequencing, editing timelines, editing notes etc with preview/graphics in a quarter or smaller part of the screen where curvature is no big issue (IMO curved is in many scenarios very likely not a big issue).

Then, just in case, you can have a flat monitor (can be smaller, like an iPad Pro or a display above the curved display) etc where reproduction is more accurate (many use the iPad Pro for Mini-LED and OLED for color grading). Same iPad can also be used to control your DAWs or show your mixer panels.

Suspect they are at least exploring ultrawide options in the lab. Would be cool if they sold both.

Lucky you to have that kind of money to spend on just a monitor 😀

I had written a long answer to among other you but I think that the over all answer to a lot of this maybe is another more simple one : Peoples expectations and general worldview(s) maybe often depend on their spending limits 😁

Mate, I think it is rather your issue on the matter. A usable 4K display today is far cheaper today, but again I wonder what tech knowdledge you actually have - an iPad can run a 4K monitor today.

The situation with chips and tech in music productions has progressed so much it is pure insanity we still are having a discussion about HD.

As I said, I have only one pair of eyes 👀

I plan all my studio expenses 1-2 years ahead and save accordingly. I agree that people budgets vary greatly. But there are many cheaper options, ASUS 5K is around £750 here in UK. There’s also second hand market.

Generic 27” 4K monitors from the likes of ACER or AOC are really not that expensive nowadays, around £200 in UK, I’ve just checked online shops.

It’s not directed to you, but in general terms: If something is not affordable then why not to say so, instead of saying “no one needs it”? 😉

Anyway, interesting and surprisingly civil discussion 👍
