Cubase tracks not initiated on KK S88 until I press instance

I'm new forgive me :) I've done something wrong in setup and can't seem to get it back. When I use Cubase 12 on Mac and select a track, I can't play anything until I select Instance on the keyboard. I'm fairly sure I didn't start out this way. When I press instance the leds come on and all good to play. I switch to another track in the DAW the LEDs go out and although Instance is lit up on the keyboard, I have to press Instance again to light lip the LEDs and to initiate the track. I'm fairly sure this isn't a standard feature and I've unlocked something weird......can anyone give me any pointers to try please?
