Has anyone had to return their Mk 3 keyboards due to NOT being able to install the firmware?

Didn’t see the point of trying to reboot a board with NO firmware at all…it had started with .29 to get it going, which it did point me to the next few steps, and this became unsuccessful unfortunately. Then read more deeper and deeper realising I had to go into forums to find more ways, even buy a Mac USB -C hub.

And finally NOT realising that some update’s actually took up to 4 hours.

Why should any customer have to be put thru all of this to boot a board that basically should actually just work. Nonsense tbh.

Keyboard is on it’s way back in the morning.

Ultimately, it's your decision, but I'd be sorry to see the keyboard returned without us having had a chance to help fix the setup issues with your system.

Do you have a support ticket referencing your firmware issue?

Not having a support ticket or trouble shooting history to reference, I can only offer the following:

It seems that your chipset may well be one affected by the following - which is an issue with your machine we can advise around, but not ourselves directly fix. See below:

    USB-C Connectivity Issue:

    Problem:
Some computer chipsets made between 2020 and 2023 have a known  USB-C error that can't be fixed. This can cause sporadic problems with USB-C peripherals like the Kontrol S MK3, including connection failures, freezing, or issues with firmware updates.

    Solution:
If you experience these issues, try using a USB-C hub between your Kontrol S MK3 and your computer. This can help avoid the problem and ensure a stable connection. This is critically important during firmware updates, as data loss could cause broken firmware. Make sure the hub supports both power and data transfer.

I understand from your message that you might have tried that, but I'm not sure? I would love people to simply plug, and play, but the reality is a lot of users have been trying to use it with USB-A (doesn't provide enough power) or have fallen foul of the above issue.

There is also a more minor issue that can affect peripherals such as us when doing high intensity data transfer such as firmware updates:

    USB Controller Issue:

    Problem:
Even with a USB-C hub, you might occasionally see errors during firmware updates (error -2). This can happen if the USB Controller is overloaded, especially if other devices are connected and transferring data during the update.

    Solution:
To fix this, power your keyboard using a wall charger, unplug any other USB devices from your computer, and then try the firmware update again

As Matthew says, if you are having the chipset problem (and we don't know that for sure), then it can't be fixed by Native Instruments…because it's a problem in the chipset, not in the MK3.

My MK3 works fine when I power it via an old iPhone charger; 20 Watts is the one I have.

And I use an unpowered i5 USBC hub…which is plugged into a powered hub. But the unpowered hub also works fine by itself. I have it the way it is right now because it's a longer cable run from the computer at my 2 o'clock all the way back to my MK3 at 7 o'clock and another 4 feet away from me.

I get your concern about not using the MK3 live. I don't think I would either, unless I had two of them. But by that point, I'd just use either my Roland Fantom or my Yamaha Montage M for live gigging.
