When it separates the stems , it puts then on a separate sound for each one , within the group.
Each stem will be in a sampler module , click the third icon down , which looks like a waveform , that should take you to sample edit and you should them see the waveform.

    HI @Jeremy_NI
i have a related question I hope you can help with
I also have Traktor 4 and tried to export stems, but nothing easily except for in Logic which recognizes the .m4a file and automatically splits for you in the daw.

I just upgraded to maschine 3 in hopes of a quicker solution.
I have sucessfully split the stems,
but was expecting a 'drag and drop' .wav from the audio/pattern section say in to Ableton for eg.

But because they are sampler modules and not wave forms in the SOUND slot, this is not possible.
Is there a way that is built into maschine 3.0 to easily export stems for use?

    Thanks kindly,
    Marcus

Hey Marcus, I'm forwarding it to the devs as a feature request, it's a pretty cool idea. Thanks for sharing.

Concerning STEMs and Maschine SW…. I wonder for years why Maschine does not have ability to export project as STEM file. Traktor uses STEMs for years and Maschine does not make STEMs that one might use in Traktor….. I do not mean STEM separation, I mean rendering Maschine project as STEM file.

@dj noodle soup In the meantime, our Maschine guru Boris mentioned that once you created the stems, you can right click them and choose Find in Finder, then you can copy the file to your DAW.

@Kubrak I'm afraid this will not happen. Stems is some kind of relic from the past in Traktor, it seems it didn't have the use it was expected in the past.

But one of the reason might be there was not much support from NI. If Maschine had had STEM export from day 1 of introducing STEMs to Traktor…. Even now there would be use cases for STEM export in Maschine….

Maschine can't save NI's old Traktor Stem format… The industry simply did not adopt NI's attempt of creating a new audio-file format standard, so it's dead… Stem separation being available on the fly for any song in other DJ SW first was the last nail in that coffin - Now thats the norm/standard.. its too late now.

The same way producers didn't adopt sounds.com.. So it's also dead.

Yes, but there is difference to create better or worse STEMs by separation or being created natively….

Either way STEMs made its way to being used. Just different route. Now, IMHO, opens the window to refresh idea of STEM file format. Sooner or later there might be demand for hi quality STEMs, not just those made by separation….

But it would need to refresh the STEM file format. One cannot play loosless STEM file on Win, ufor example… So, native created STEMs are not usable for Win DJs, if they do not want to play loosy tracks…..

And STEM file is just mp4 container (or something like it), so it is sort of industry standard. But I understand, what you have meant.

I do agree with the sentiment behind what Kubrak is saying here.

NI's original pre-separated stems format for Traktor was an open system, that could have been adopted for stem file storage by other companies, so that any software storing stem files could have used it - meaning cross compatibility.

Instead we've got the usual situation where they all use their own different system, and stems files stored by software A won't work in software B etc.

A multi audio track format will always sound much better, no doubt! But is the simple step of first exporting multi-track audio then using a tool to convert to that format really what’s keeping you from using it or it becoming popular? I don’t think so… there’s no way labels would adopt that format, no way many producers would want their drums to be easily stolen, etc…

But… of course, if I am DJing with my own music the I’d rather user a stem file format!

It doesn't play on windows because it’s not an adopted format by the industry, and it never will… imho. NI could suport Linux, it’s awesome yet since it’s not popular it’s not worth the effort. Such is life

A container? Sure… it’s a bunch of tracks in one regardless if it’s not popular then it’s not adopted.

Loosless STEM does not play on Win in Traktor. The cause is that STEM container uses Apple loosless format (if looseless STEM). If NI would extend STEM format also to flac, the life would be better.

One cannot use loosless STEMs on Win, so there is no reason to create own STEM loosless files. They cannot be used on Win.

In my opinion, Native Instruments should create the stems file directly from Mascine 3 as a stems creator, without having to go through a thousand steps, so it would be a real novelty, and there would be a big sale by Native Instruments
