Traktor 4 Glitches and crashes after changing to Windows 10

For the longest time, I used Traktor 2.6.8 (mostly) and Traktor 3 (sometimes) on my Windows 8 laptop (Asus with Pentium 7 processor) and a Pioneer DDJ-SZ controller without any problems. I also sometimes us a Pioneer T1 and an Akai AMX as controller.

Then I decided to upgrade to Traktor 4 and Windows 10 (as Traktor 4 recommends and thus needs that?). Since then Traktor has become unstable. Pops and glitches at least once in every track (I use Flac only) and sometimes the music keeps on playing, but the controller doesn't work any longer. This makes my Traktor laptop totally unuseable for gigs.

I also got a Kontrol S8 and that controller gives me the same problems, so I'm guessing it's not controller related. With the S8, when clicking setup, I can change the latency. However, on the Pioneer the latency is set on 256 but when I try to change it, the program crashes. Either way, the clicking and crashing wasn't an issue when I used Windows 8 and setting the latency higher doesn't seem to solve the problems.

I use the laptop only for dj'ing and I disabled as much stuff as I could (wi fi, bluetooth, updates and I even used debloater scripts to get rid of unwanted stuff). So here are my questions:

  1. Will Traktor 4 work with Windows 8?
  2. Did anyone have the same problems with windows 10 and if yes, what did you do to fix it?
  3. Any suggestions (besides getting an Apple?)

Thanks for your replies !

There is also a shortcut to the DDJ-SZ config tool in the Start menu so you can set latency prior opening Traktor.

What hardware are we talking about exactly, CPU, graphics, RAM, SSD?

And are all drivers up to date?

With Windows 10, at least one SATA SSD and 8GB RAM should be installed.

The specs of my laptop. Here we go:

    Asus N751J

    Processor Intel I7-4710hq 2.50Ghz

    16 Gb ram

    Graphics Nvidea GeForce GTX 850M

    Asio4All v 2.16

    Windows 10 22H2 updated Oct 22 2024

1hd and 2 SSD with more than enough free space

Latest Pioneer DDJ-Sz drivers and firmware (altough they are older; it's not the latest controller. But still, it worked fine under Win8.)

All my tracks are FLAC format made with the Freac app

Latency setting in preferences: 256 processing 5.8ms output 0.0 overal 5.8ms. If I try to change it by clicking on settings, the Windows/system32 windows opens. If I close it, Traktor freezes, so I can not adjust the latency. (if I connect my Kontrol S8, I can change the latency, but when I hook up the Pioneer, the setting is again 256). Also, adjusting the latency n the Asio4All driver, doesn't help.

I switched off Multi-core processing in the audio setup just to be sure, but to no avail.

The crackling sounds is very short, but audible and annoying, like an old vinyl static crackle. It happens at least once every song, but most of the times it happens more than once. There is no peak in processing power (which is always on the very low side), nor is there a (noticeable) slowdown of the wave form. The crashing ( track keeps playing but no more reaction from the controller) happens randomly, not every time I play or record a set, but it never happened before when I used Windows 8. The crash happens even when I'm not touching the controller, the computer or the cables, just happens while listening to a song playing, so totally random.

When I disconnect and reconnect the usb, sometimes the controller works again, but that is no real solution ofcourse.

I hope this gives you the info you need. Thank you for your time !

Update. I tried the latency of 512 with my Kontrol S8 and that worked nice, maybe 1 or 2 crackles during a 2 hour test set, so I can live with that.

My conclusion is that the latency setting (256) for the Pioneer DDJ-SZ is to low, but how can I change it if every time I try to, Traktor crashes?

All I see in the equipment list is ASIO4All which is a guaranteed trouble zone.

Is there any specific reason you are not using a reasonable audio interface with fully supported ASIO drivers?

And just because you ran Win 8 on that ASUS does not necessarily mean Windows 10 will run flawlessly.

I mean we are talking about a 4th Gen 2014 cpu here in 2024. Expecting challenges is not out of the ordinary here

To Dj Andre Thank you for that great tip. I'm gonna check out all those suggestions. Maybe the USB time out is the reason why sometimes the controller just stops working.

To Vocalpoint. Are you suggesting I would get a Traktor audio 2 or 6or Pioneer dj interface and put that in between the controller and the laptop and use it's legacy ASIO driver instead of the Asio4All? Would that work? Would it replace the soundcard that's in the Pioneer DDJ-SZ?

I also use a DDJ-SZ with the default Pioneer DDJ-SZ driver on Windows 11. Also used it with Windows 10 in the past. It might be that Traktor 4 is a bit more CPU consuming than Traktor 3 which I used but with a SSD and Windows configured as described in the document I provided, I think a 4th gen i7 should be able to do the job.

Also try the Pioneer Native driver for Windows 10/11 and see if it helps.

Hey Andre, I could imagine that Traktor 4 could be a bit more cpu hungry, but seeing it works fine with the Kontrol S8 and that I was doing nothing but recording some songs, no sync, no efects, no stems, just plain songs, it would be strange that the CPU would be put to the test. Besides, the CPU meter is on the very low side.

And where can I find that Pioneer native driver? Can't seem to find one one the Pioneer page https://www.pioneerdj.com/en/support/software/

Suggesting that anything is better than ASIO4All.

Always try and use the driver that is specifically written for your device.

    There it is:

I red something about ASIO4ALL but in the same post you said the Pioneer Drivers are up-to-date. I think I got you wrong there and you have the same driver installed. In that case, my bad.

For Vocal Point and Dj Andre,

Thanks again for all your help. I removed the Asio4All drivers and I can still select the Pioneer DDJ-SZ (asio), so I guess now it uses it's propriety asio driver, but alas, I still cannot change the latency from 250something to 512 (which I think would solve the glitches) without Traktor opening the Windows/system32 explorer and then freezing. I have to use task manager to turn it off.

I did follow up on what Dj Andre sent me. I turned off all USB "this computer can turn off power" options and I changed all my harddrives to non-compressable on non-indexable. Maybe this will keep the controller from losing it's connection to the laptop. I will be testing that in the following days.

I'm also going to give LatencyMon a try and see what that comes up with.

Also gonna try disabling the Nvidea graphics card and run the program on the built-in windows graphics as I think Traktor doesn't really need a fast graphics card?

I will keep you posted. Who knows, this thread can be usefull to others with the same problems.

    Heyo!

After reading all the troubleshoot you have managed to do, I will suggest you to reinstall Traktor. Please make sure to uninstall it following the steps below.

    1. Download the file NI Uninstall RegTool_64bit.zip attached at the bottom of this article, move it to your desktop and unzip it.
    2. Right-click the extracted file NI Uninstall RegTool_64bit.exe and choose Run as administrator:
    3. If a User Account Control window pops up, confirm with Yes.
    4. Select the product that is causing issues, e.g. The Giant and click Remove selected product:
    5. Confirm with OK to start the process.

Now you can start the installation of the NI product again.

Also if you could you share your LatencyMon file would be really useful.
