AFAIK you can use the line faders via controller in the old version, but they are still disabled in the UI.

Up to 3.10.1, right?
Without going into your second part (combinations of MIDI devices, different software, etc), if you are using the x1mk3, you could install the qml-mod i made (in my sig), which provides gain control in mixer mode instead of (or rather, in addition to) line fader control using the knob #4.
