Why did this happen? Kontakt stopped working and I lost sounds

It's saying

"One or more Kontakt instances cannot be recalled correctly, perhaps due to missing content.

Please open any Kontakt instance in your host, Komplete Kontrol or Maschine to resolve the issue."

This is happening when I'm opening files too often. I bought all these sounds, and now they will not play? I was preparing to export over 200 projects. I'm sick, and ready to chuck this maschine in the dump if I cannot figure this out.

So someone, anyone, please tell me that there is an easy fix available. I had Kontakt and now this Kontakt 7 player which i do not even know how I have it, is causing major issues.

Possible reason, based on experience and seeing the same thing happen to other users on the forum:

    • Recently Native Instruments broke support for existing DAW sessions with Kontakt 6 and some updated libraries. This happened months after the libraries were released and installed by many users who continued to use them in existing DAW sessions.
    • The fix is to install the Kontakt 6 version of the library from that link, then in your Kontakt 6 based DAW session locate the Kontakt 6 library. If you want to keep both the Kontakt 6 and 7 versions of a library, I've been told that you can install in a different location to the Kontakt 7 version and both will work, but it sounds like you don't care about Kontakt 7. As far as I know the bits that only work in Kontakt 7 relate to NKS so if like me you don't use that, you should be fine with only the Kontakt 6 content library.

As for why you have Kontakt 7 player, another user had this happen to them – it was automatically installed when installing one of the updated content libraries.

You can find Kontakt 6 compatible libraries here:

I hope that helps you get everything working again.

(edit: in case you're on a Mac, the downloaded iso files will mount as a virtual hard drive when you open them. You then need to go to that drive and the installer is there. I don't know how it works on Windows.)

try to open Kontakt in stand alone and check if those libraries are working in stand alone.

if they are still missing and you are on a Mac, go to library/application support/ and delete the Kontakt folder.

after that open Kontakt in stand alone again and let it rebuild the library after It loaded all your instruments, try again in you DAW.

(assuming you didn't relocate your Kontakt libraries)

Sorry, where do we get the Kontakt 6 versions?

I'm sick and tired of Native Instruments breaking old versions of their software every time something new comes out!

OK, duh, I had to click on the thread title above, not the link to the .png file.

But this is still terrible. We have to manually download each of these libraries, some of them gigabytes, and then we have to replace the newer library with the older one. Why can't we automatically have the new versions running in K7 and old versions running in K6? You know, like most of the other libraries? Upgrades should never break things! This is something that needs to be fixed by NI, not given a cumbersome workaround like this. 🤦‍♂️
