Multiple Instances of Guitar Rig?

Hi -

I'm kind of a feature creep, and wanting to recreate something like my last rig (Late '90s - Lexicon MPX, Mesa TriAmp, power amp) using Guitar Rig as my FX system.

That setup used part of the Lexicon box for the pre-preamp FX, then the preamp, then the rest of the Lexicon box for the modulation/delay/'verb FX). Since I have an actual amplifier with a preamp I like, I want to put that between sections of a Guitar Rig rig. How does that work? Do I need simultaneous instances of Guitar Rig running on my PC?

I'll figure out the interface bits once I understand how to get the configuration I want.

Thank you all for your patience and insight.

You'd need to run two instances of GR to do this, plus either an interface with enough ins and outs that supports connecting two clients to the interface at once or two interfaces. That works ok, but when you start the second instance you get a message saying "Another instance of GR is running so database changes won't be saved".

A send/return module in GR would be really useful for cases like this, a bit like you get on some guitar modellers. I use a Helix and that has a couple of stereo send/return pairs so you can use 4CM wiring very easily.

To be sure I understood you, such a module doesn't exist in GR?

I need to look at this Helix thing/.

    Thanks!

Correct - there's no send/return in the GR software. Helix is a hardware unit from Line6 not software, although it does have good ASIO drivers so can be used as a computer interface while using all the effects etc.

    EEEK! $1500?

I'm trying to not dump a bunch of dough into this.

I guess I need to look into how to write modules for NI.

Yeah... expensive! You can run GR6 and GR7 simultaneously without getting the database update warning, so if you have a multichannel interface you could set things up with GR7 -> external -> GR6
