MIDI Input: what am I doing wrong?

Well, I want to thank all of my discussion partners here. The truth is not exactly as simple as we have declared so far, because I am now running MIDI out from the ports in the back of the keyboard, and MIDI in through USB at the same time, and it's working.

The only thing I can say definitively is that for now in Finale, KONTROL 49 MK3 is the only MIDI Input setting that will allow me to do speedy note entry using the MK3, and I can use MIDI Thru to hear what I'm playing as a workaround.

Thanks again, everyone. I tried at least 5 things I never would have thought of because of your great ideas in this thread.

That looks like you're using USB from the keyboard to the software, then out from the software to the MIDI adapter (back to the keyboard) whick won't do anything because the ports are disabled.

@PK The DJ, I hear what your saying, but it works. I can't explain why. But, it solves the problem I was trying to solve.

As long as it works you're good! One other possibly more simple idea - as Finale will host a VST, can't you use Kontakt inside Finale to play your sounds?

But that’s definitely not how I would set it up.

The first way I would have thought would be having the keyboard send the midi to Finale and then Finale sending its midi out to the program you use to load the instruments (by hosting it or by sending the midi out to it).

In this way you’ll have the keyboard recording its midi in Finale and that same midi playing the instrument (while playing it “live” but also when “reading” what has been written/recorded).

If you think about it, it’s the same way it works in any DAW: the midi controller sends the midi to a track and the track sends it to the loaded instrument. So the instrument will play either directly from the midi controller but also once recorded in the piano roll (and not touching the midi controller anymore)

Without any need to have the keyboard sending its midi message to 2 programs
