KKS MK3 stuck at "Get latest update" - no firmware updater launching

Ok so I’m about to return my second unit to Zzounds. NI tech-support has reached back to me and wants me to return it to get one in stock, but I have mine on payment plan, and honestly I don’t see a difference because the problem is the manufacturing or something. I really love this keybed, so I’m holding out and I’m going to get a Third but in the meantime, I’m going to try this method but I’m gonna tell all you this right now: that sounds like a wing and a prayer. That sounds like it can brick at any time, I’m not sure, and I don’t feel very confident about this compared to my MK2. NI really needs to get their software and firmware abilities fixed. I’m not trying to sound nice at all because I’m extremely frustrated.
my problem started as soon as I connected it to my FULLY CHARGED MacBook Pro: screen said “power is low” yaddah yaddah.
WTH?! it’s plugged into the wall and fully charged. Tried it with my Acer nitro Windows laptop. SAME MESSAGE.
and this is from both MK3 S49 keyboards that I have had so far.
This should work right out of box!
Let alone my black keys about four of them are scuff the hell out of a sealed box. Naiv support member said that warrants a return. Honestly, I don’t care what the keys look like if they’re all scuffed up, I just wanted to device that functions as described and can be updated.
So in conclusion, what I’m saying is that the problem is when you try to update it drops down to version 0.0.1 , then if it keeps working for a minute to keep trying to update, drops to “-“. That’s the best possible outcome, now these are getting white screen of death bricking.
So I don’t see how just trying to cycle something 20 times which I definitely have done to no avail with the 2 to 3 second in between or no seconds in between …I’ve done every possible option / combination… isn’t it self an innate flaw in hard rebooting. I think the best solution is a better firmware installed at the manufacture, and/or fix the firmware updater.

Hope that you will get a working keyboard soon !
Best wishes ! 🙂

The splash screens are located in root file system in /boot/splashscreens, and not with the first or second stage bootloaders. The screen will stay white if it can't load the splash screen or can't load the root file system. Possibly corrupted during a bad previous update attempt? Unfortunately the recovery spashscreen is also located on the root file system, making it nearly impossible to know when the device is in recovery mode.
NI Devs - Would be nice if you put the splash screens somewhere else other than the rootfs, so they will not be affected by a botched firmware update?

I cannot say if (in my case) the power cycling did add to the solution. What I saw is that upon first power cycle, there were very small fine lines on top of the screen and they go less and less with each power cycle.
Probably NI can say more about this "potential" solution, but I think the "trick" in my case was using a power supply and using USB-A connection via an external hub to update the firmware (because any other connection did not work).
Also, it is worth mentioning that after the initial firmware update went through, I could remove the power supply and use a USB cable (5m!) with no appearant problems so far.
Fingers crossed for you!

Thanks @PoorFellow for tagging us 👍
@Chris_NI looks after the firmware updating and will take note. He is out until the end of the week so wanted to acknowledge receipt.

still waiting for a driver or working firmware, can't update the firmware. tried every usb connection

It is possible that you may need to both power the keyboard via the USB-C power port and at the same time use a self-powered USB-C hub to act as a go between between keyboard and computer. (cable must be able to transmit data).
The hub could possibly be required because the firmware the keyboard is shipped with may not play equally nice with all chips sets and all drivers. This is mostly a problem with Windows based computers but have also been seen with the odd MAC computer !

I tried it but it didn't help ;o(

Alas ! , then you need to contact hardware support with your issue rather than just wait for something to magically happen.

they said in one thread that they are currently testing a new driver, so i will wait a few more days, maybe I'm lucky and they bring it out soon

Thanks for this, i've shared this and all related threads with the QA team ... really appreciate the valuable feedback.

I have had mine for couple of days and - after the weekend - I am giving back this piece of... I am preparing now a video for youtube, for others to laugh what sound switching or screen updating might look like. This is just unbelievable!
Tried to contact NI, but I already have bad experience.
This is my private manual for the latest Series S mk 3 keyboards.
CASE 1 - FIRMWARE UPDATE (MACOS)
In most civilised countries and with most producers, the process of user based firmware update is well thought and seamless. After you see messages, that this or that USB-C port cannot supply enough power (speaking of high power mac studio ports) and eventually end-up powering the keyboard from an additional, external power brick (sold separately) you may try to update the firmware.
1. connect KOMPLETE via USB-C
2. ignore error message on Komplete screen
3. disconnect, power off
4. connect again and try NI updater again
5. repeat steps 3 and 4
6. change USB-C port
7. change computer
8. restart NI updater
9. find USB-C, powered hub and try steps 3-8
If still no go, find a decent midi keyboard and use the KOMPLETE KONTROL S-SERIES as an expensive but definitely good looking monitor support maybe
CASE 2 - USING KOMPLETE KONTROL - BROWSER
In most cases upon loading a sound what you see on S-SERIES screen has nothing to do with the actually loaded instrument or sound.
1. start KOMPLETE KONTROL software
2. on your KOMPLETE S SERIES click browser
3. browse for sounds
4. when loaded the screen does not update, keys for plugin or browser do not work, keyboard works
5. switch the KOMPLETE S SERIES off
6. switch the KOMPLETE S SERIES on
7. the screen now shows the plugin fine
8. after some time - when rotary knobs cease to update repeat steps 5 and 6
CASE 3 - USING PLUGIN, BROWSER AND DAW keys
If you accidentally press the DAW key you are unable to select any other function - the keys go off and the only one active is already active DAW key
1. switch the KOMPLETE S SERIES off
2. switch the KOMPLETE S SERIES on
3. now the three buttons (BROWSER, PLUGIN and DAW are active again
4. under no circumstances press the DAW key again!
5. you may glue that button somehow to avoid future mistakes
CASE 4 - LOADING INSTRUMENTS IN KOMPLETE KONTROL SOFTWARE
If you attempt to load an instrument to KOMPLETE KONTROL SOFTWARE and you see a message saying that this version of kontakt is too old for the plugin to load
1. make sure all NI plugins and software is up to date (it usually is)
2. unload KOMPLETE KONTROL software i your DAW
3. load any other, decent plugin of a company that has more respect for its supporting customers...
4. search for sounds - can still use S-SERIES as a midi keyboard, without the screen and other "smart" functions

Tom: what macOS are you running?

I am running macOS 13.5.1 (Ventura)

@ADN 01 Sorry to hear your issues.
All I can say is that using USB-C is absolutely NOT recommended when using a Mac Studio (or Macbook Pro for that matter).
My issues disappeared using an USB-C to USB-A adapter on the back of the MK3 keyboard, then connect via USB-A to a USB-A hub which is connected to the Mac Studio.
This only works if you add a power supply. I have chosen a 20 Euro adapter by Samsung (used to charge their mobile phones).
In this combination, the keyboard works fine (despite a few quirks, like e.g. a totally different behaviour of the touch strip, which is mind-blowingly bad).
NI does sell a USB-C compatible keyboard which it is not. The problem could be that NI uses some kind of stripped down USB cabling which causes problems in conjunction with the Mac Studio.
Cheers
Tom
