Browsing with endless encoders vs Mini Trackpad

I'm thinking of getting a midi device with 4 endless encoders with push buttons. I would like to use them to browse my library. My other option would be a mini USB mousepad/trackpad type thing to control the cursor...

I am starting to get back issues from leaning over my coffin to reach my laptop (my coffin has a shelf behind my turntables to hold equipment) and basically only really touch my laptop these days for browsing songs... I would like to get something small that I can keep near me that would be easiest for browsing. I generally use smart playlists, big ones....

My question is about midi commands... will I be able to sort different columns by pushing buttons? I know I can"t load tracks, scroll etc... but if I can sort or jump to my current bpm in the list then I think I might order a mini mouse/trackpad so I can move the cursor around....
