opus file format support

Is there any roadmap for including opus file format support?

So what is opus?

AFAIK it is the most advanced lossy file format which has some degree of adoption. Majority of players / web browsers seem to already support it but DJ software/hardware support does not exist yet.
Below is kind of timeline of lossy / lossless file formats with higher adoption:

Lossy:
MP3 —> AAC —> Ogg Vorbit —> Opus

Lossless:
WAV/AIFF —> FLAC

Opus advantage is that you can get relatively good sound quality with 64kbps.

While it probably will not become "a main file format" for DJs (I consider FLAC the best "main file format") I can see some scenarios where opus playback would be needed.

  • if you are musician and send promos to DJs it is definitely advantage to have adequate sound quality at this bandwidth, especially if you live or work somewhere where is slow internet connection.

Also you could have your whole DJ-collection fit more easily to smartphone or small USB stick as 64kbps opus files.

Before discussion gets out of hand I remind that don't compare opus to WAV, AIFF or FLAC as they are lossless.

More relevant comparison is opus vs. MP3 vs. AAC (or even vs. Ogg Vorbis which is otherwise non relevant but Spotify and/or? Soundcloud uses it for streaming. Anyway even Ogg Vorbis is one generation behind opus, which seems to be state of the art of formats that have some degree of adoption).

Opus is also free/open source, which AAC is not.

Opus does have one disadvantage: it seems to not have 44.1khz, only 48khz. It is also max 2 channels (stereo). Anyway None of the listed stuff will sound as good at 64kbps as opus.
