No linux, time to go.

Due to mounting privacy concerns, instability issues and being trapped in a system that tries to monopolize me vs, providing interchangability and “standards” to enhance my workflow and creativity, I AM DONE WITH WINDOWS! On the privacy front, every keystroke is always monitored. Once upon a time, that was a no-no. But, with the advent of AI, every password, seed phrase , account info that you ever type into your machine is recorded in the anals of cyber space for NSA, Corporations and Hackers to see for the rest of time. I’m getting rid of my iPhone in lieu of GrapheneOS. All my machines are going Linux.

And, I am not the only one. Linux is awesome for latency and just plain efficiency in processing… audio and video. There are too many other incredible synths and sampler packages out there than to be stuck in WindowWorld to keep Native Instruments. I have been loyal to NI for as far back as I can remember. I have always bought the Highest end Komplete packages, happy knowing that they were further improving it for the future.

But, it seems that NI have gone to painstaking lengths to make sure their products cannot be used on linux boxes. Now, everyone who looks at linux knows its not a cakewalk (no pun intended). But, it has become much more enticing of late. In fact, everything I do, including video editing is on ubuntu (linux)… EXCEPT AUDIO AND COMPOSITION.

I have also provided constant loyal support to steinberg. CUBASE has always been my “goto”. But, enough is enough. I’ve loaded Reaper. And, whatever it takes to use it in place of CUBASE and all of the products that require scumbag Gate’s Windows is on the table.

The workflow if so much faster on linux, that the tradeoff is worth it even if NI will not support my effort to use their product and support them year after year.

No one using linux has ever expected a turnkey package from synth vendors. But, to go out of your way to make sure that not a single installer is accessible for linux users to use with “wine” and other linux tools, is just incomprehensible.

At the very least, the separate installers should be made available on the dashboard so that linux users can employ them. For God’s sake! We are paying you! I really don’t understand why you couldn’t create a linux installer similar to native access that would install VSTs on linux machines. The users of such equipment will handle adapting them to Reaper, or Bitwig, or whatever else they use.

This is kind of a “vent” becaue I am really ticked of about this. But, it is also notice that I and many more people will be moving away from the spy-laden monopolistic world of Microsoft and Apple.

NI, if you are listening, perhaps you could contact me and help me by giving me the installers that I pay for over and over again. I don’t expect technical support, But, I really do expect uninhibited access to all of the software that I pay to use.

I Dont mind your rant at all.

Its a race to the bottom between Apple and M$ - spyladen indeed, I hear you about all the priivacy invasion nonsense going on. Its like a tsunami now and people have traded what was common sense privacy values for the glitzey dazzling screens and other spy infested stuff they've fallen for hook line and sinker. Ive never had a smart pjhone and dont intend to. TLA's are everywhere. Cellphones are utlimately a glorified bugging device.

Every now and then I get a glimpse of the nightmare that is windows, and now it seems exfiltrating every move you make back to 'billyware' and how far down the toilet its all gone since windows XP days, which I still use offline.

I also detest the barrage of third party stuff your browser is busy dealing with on more and more websites. This privacy pinch is coming at us from every direction these days and its getting worse. I subscribe to the default deny method and its intersting to see how many requests you're blocking. NI's old forum was fine. None of this allowing scripts and cookies for this and that, just when you're visiting and not logged in.

TOTALLY TOTALLY TOTALLY agree about NI giving people the installers thye've paid for and stop pushing us off to damned googledrive when NA has its usual hissy-fits OR we need a previous installer.

I'm on Linux for net stuff. With a bit of thought it was OK for me to install myself and prepare an older computer putting in HDDs etc. Unfortunately Im stuck with Apple for music stuff as Logic is all I know and its getting a bit late for me to change to something like Reaper. Trust me I would if I could. So my work around is having my machine offline unless I specifically need an update or something, which Im avoiding like the plague if everything is going reasonably OK.

    Take Care.

Contemplating the switch to Linux: music stuff is the big hangup: I use Studio One (which has a beta version with missing features) and NI including Komplete and add-ons like Nucleus. Don't want to lose it all. There's dual boot, but how does that handle nightly backups from both OSes? Could try to use a mini pc dedicated to sound and rig up a KVM but see too many complaints coming from those who've tried that approach. Would the MOTU M4 audio interface really appreciate getting passed between the mini pc and my main rig? OK, maybe run in a VM or Wine? Not optimistic that NI will run cleanly. Too much to figure out. I wanna make music.
