Automation Record (Arrange/Song View) ONLY working with mouse & not with midi learn

3.1 + Mikro III - loving the hardware/software

i was hoping that I could record automation in the Arrange / Song View rather than the Loop/Ideas view & was very pleased to see that I could (getting longer automation lanes).

However I am running into a confusing issue.

when i press RECORD and then use the mouse to adjust ON THE RING it records the automation — COOL!

HOWEVER - when I "midi learn" (using a BeatStep encoder set to Absolute for the CC) it successfully LEARNS and ADJUSTS the parameter BUT it ONLY rotates the on-screen dial and DOESN'T RECORD to an automation lane.

I am stuck on whether it's a bug (i think so) or wether i am missing something. the fact that if i do the 'click on the actual ring' with the mouse that the automation is recorded suggest that it might be a bug ?!?

thanks in advance

unfortunately automation can’t be recorded from 3rd party midi devices , whilst you can set up a midi cc to control something you can’t record it , unless you use a maschine controller or native keyboard.

I think you can use the knob on the mikro

    how odd and annoying.

    i'll try the knob

it’s a little annoying, but it’s due to automation not actually being midi , more a proprietary control with higher resolution

The easiest way of adding some extra knobs would be a secondhand m32 , those knobs will automap to the maschine and can be recorded

but what is the point of midi-learn if not for automation? and any other daw can record automation. just seems like unneccessary protectionism.

i did strongly consider a NI keyboard, but the lack of anything-but-usb on the back pushed me in the direction of arturia.

i wish NI would just release a 'Kontrol' box with just the eight encoders.

so much for Maschine being a standalone DAW its just a drag midi to Logic to automate plugin parameters

they added midi control for easier sound design , like I said the recording of automation or modulation as it’s called ( there’s actually a technical difference between the two ) is not midi data .

If you look at the maschine knob being modulated , the knob itself isn’t moving, so it doesn’t need to return to it’s position at the end of the pattern /modulation , the modulation effects the sound , but it doesn’t change the true position in terms of sound design, if you move that true position, it moves the modulation as well , that’s why’s it’s measured in %

if you did the same with a midi cc (continuous control) , you would have to return the knob to it exact position to get your sound to sound the same . And if you wanted to change the sounds characteristics you’d more than likely have to replace the automation as it wouldn’t sound the same.

I suppose what is confusing is that you can midi learn / assign an encoder to a plugin parameter in Logic and other DAWS — so it’s not unreasonable to expect the same in NKS

btw you cannot learn the single encoder on the mikro

the single encoder on the mikro , should be auto mapped to whatever parameter is selected / in focus

I do get what you’re saying tho , so don’t feel like I’m lecturing you
