Hello, NI community.

I need your help.

I purchased my S88 MK3, and it will arrive on Tuesday.

I want to buy VOLUME and EXPRESSION pedals for this keyboard. What are the most suitable pedals for it?

I appreciate all your help.

Sincerely,

Ivan Tikvicki

We know it's a pain point for some. The issue is being worked on. I'm not sure what can be addressed by software or firmware update. For the time being, we would recommend a sustain pedal that has a polarity switch. For half damper pedals we would recommend the Roland Dp-10, with the extra configuration steps above.

Here's a lit of pedals we tested and that are fully functional:

    Sustain Pedals: M Audio SP2, Fatar VFP1, 25Fatar PS-100, Boss FS-5U, Casio SP-7

Expression Pedals: Moog EP 3, M Audio EXP, Yamaha FC7, Roland EV-5, Boss FV-300L

    Hakf Damper: Roland DP-10

For the DP-10, there are a few extra steps.

The switch mode works out of the box. For continuous mode to work, it requires some steps:

    • calibration works “the other way round”, when the hardware asks for “Move the pedal all the way down”, do nothing, then when the hardware says “Move the pedal all the way up”, press the sustain pedal
    • after that it sends out continuous data on CC11
    • after changing the MIDI CC to 64, it works and recalls as expected

There is a discussion over here ! And , quote : "half-pedaling works like a charm on the S88 mk3 using the Roland DP-10 pedal."

Also : How to Configure Sustain / Expression Pedals on Kontrol Keyboards

P.S. I have no idea which of the pedals mentioned in discussions that can be used for "VOLUME and EXPRESSION"..

Thank you, PoorFellow, for your quick help. Let me see these two links; I hope I will find the correct answer.

I have the M-Audio EX-P and it works fine with my S61. There's a big of a language issue with the calibration routine though, when it says pedal down/up I felt like I had to do the opposite of what the keyboard was asking. But thinking about this now, I think that's just the difference with pedals like this vs your classic piano pedal. In other words, pedals that pivot in the middle vs a traditional piano pedal that pivots at it's end.

Hello, PoorFellow. I recently checked these links and couldn't find a firm, reliable answer. Do you know another NI page about compatible pedals?

Also, are NI experts involved in this community group? Because shamely, there is no transparent NI customer support.

No , that is the problem , as far as I know it only exists for MK1 and MK2 at the moment !

In principle NI employees do not work in the weekend. Work days there are a customer care person (Jeremy_NI) who also acts as a liaison to customer support !

Dear PoorFellow, NI employees will hopefully see this question and help me. Already tomorrow, or during this coming week.

It's good to have Jeremy_NI in our group!

I generally like Boss pedals, but the FS-5U is small and uncomfortable. FV-300L looks big and firm, like FV-500L (for electric guitar).

I had M Audio SP2 before and gave it as a present.

But I think will go with M Audio SP2 (again) and M Audio EXP (shame, it is plastic hardware).

Before any purchase, I look forward to hearing from NI employees.

@Jeremy_NI , I tried but Ivan TikVicki (OP above) still wants your direct advice here !

@Ivan Tikvicki , I just noticed the text on your profile. People do not see it there. If you want help with other things such as installing KOMPLETE 14 Ultimate/KOMPLETE 14 Collector's Edition on your MacBook Pro 2016 then make a new post in the appropriate sub-forum and include also information about your OS version !

You most likely ought to use Komplete General for a question about installing komplete 14

@Ivan Tikvicki The list that @PoorFellow is accurate, all these pedals have been tested in-house and are functional. I have both the SP2 and M Audio XP at home and they work without any hassle. The XP might be a little bit ugly (only my POV) but it's way more reliable than other expression pedals I have.

PoorFellow and Jeremy_NI, thank you both for your big help!

    • Komplete General - a place where I can ask questions about installing Komplete 14 C'sE
    • I will go further with M Audio: SP2 and XP

    Have a good day!
