[NKS] Freelance Soundlabs 3rd Party NKS Libraries for Komplete Kontrol / Maschine
Comments

u-he has a public beta out of TyrellN6. Now Apple Silicon native (actually UB2 technically) and VST3 format. I just tried it. I had a third-party NKS support library (Kymea?) and the plug in opens fine in Komplete Kontrol and loads the correct patches. Only thing I noticed is there are a lot of new patches in this new beta.

Questions re: UVI NKS support
Just wondering… I noticed UVI is offering NKS support installers with some of their newer libraries. I have a couple questions some might be able to answer for me:
• I don't like the non-transparent way these installers work. They don't install in the user area. I'm very familiar how to move the files manually, like when I purchase a Freelance Soundlabs library. It's also easier for me to remove the files later if I have issues. The UVI NKS installers put the files in the factory area and I don't know how to remove them manually if things go south. I'm on a Mac. Can anyone point to directories and how to remove them?
• The reason for the above is UVI's NKS support libraries are designed so that KK (2.9.6) opens them in UVI Workstation NOT Falcon. I understand their logic since UVI Workstation is free, but I installed two of UVI's NKS libraries recently (fortunately based on experience I ran a Time Machine backup just prior) and they opened in UVI Workstation and I'm having issues with UVI WS. It's buggy. I want to only open them in Falcon. I asked UVI: if I remove UVI Workstation from my system, will they instead open in Falcon and their response was that they won't. Only UVI Workstation is supported. They might consider supporting NKS for Falcon in the future. Ugh.
Anyway, Jason… I know it doesn't make sense for you to support some of these sound libraries when the developer has already make their own NKS support, but I wish you did. I restored my boot volume to get rid of them and I probably will not install UVI's own NKS support if I can't use Falcon. I'm thinking if I know where the files are, there's probably a way to hack UVI's NKS support files so they open in Falcon but a) I don't know where those files reside, and b) I don't know how. Although I might be able to figure out b) by some careful reverse engineering/experimentation.
Anyway… I just purchased the Freelance Labs Synth Anthology 4 NKS support library. I just bought the Sonic Bundle with a good upgrade price. Looking to go for the Vintage Vault 4 library soon when I can spare the extra cash. I do like your work, Jason. Again, probably not worth it to duplicate UVI's efforts, but unless I can hack their support to open their expansions in Falcon instead of UVI WS… I'm not going to install UVI's NKS support libraries.0 -
Hi James
Yes some of the UVI libraries have NKS available via the installers, however not sure if they will expand on it or how much, likely comes down to how popular they are and TBH apart from Vintage Vault in my collection, I wouldn't say UVI are all that popular and in demand from my end so not sure how much UVI will see a demand for the work they would need to invest…. Seems many devs add a few NKS compatible instruments to leverage the exposure via NIs marketing. That is what NKS was always designed for, let's not kid ourselves it was for the benefit of users :)
I cover almost everything to date from UVI as I have done so for close to 10 years and as you know, I offer BOTH Workstation and Falcon support and many users much prefer the libraries I have created however, new users will likely never bother to find out more than what is on offer.
Other feedback I have had about the oficial libraries is the tagging is very basic (I actually comb through manually to tag every file by hand) and the templates are also, rather basic with just 2 or 3 pages of simple controls and in some cases, the controls are not working so I know some users still prefer the libraries I make for UVI but it does also mean, if they expand on it I may not continue support. But lets face it, UVI libraries aren't "synths" even when they release modelled libraries, they are just glorified sample players so there is usually only the same filter, envelope and reverb/delay effects that are found on every library they release.
I'd suggest to feedback any issues/concerns to UVI but I also know from experience, the way the pages are laid out and the control they offer isn't up to the developer really, it's an approval needed from NI and it's been said they prefer as few pages as possible for simple control where most of the users I deal with, blind users especially, need more in-depth control.
I don't have any of the official NKS libraries installed as I like the control I have with the ones I created and like you I don't like Workstation but time will tell if I keep supporting ones already made NKS compatible since I have to purchase the sonic pass subscription to make things NKS these days as I don't really buy UVI libraries anymore personally.

To find where any factory library nks preset is, right-click or control-click on the preset and choose "Find in Finder" on MacOS or whatever make sense on Windows.

Well, let me just say that I find your NKS libraries are superior to the ones provide by UVI, and if there are cases where yours are available, I'll happily purchase yours. I really want UVI's NKS libraries to open in Falcon, not UVI Workstation. I can probably hack the files so that will happen, even if it means at some point having to re-save presets from within Falcon. I did write UVI support expressing my desire to have them open in Falcon, but they seemed uninterested and I can understand their point of view.

Thanks… yep… I want to locate not just the preset but the database files as well. I'll have to dig into it at some point.

Yeah it's a hard one because not all users have Falcon and it would then also mean they would have to make 2 versions of every library (like I have done) and make it somehow choosable by the user as to which ones they want to install, which some users will not even know (based on questions I have had to answer).
It is an issue with how NKS is designed "officially", it kind of makes little sense. It has been toted as being efficient and offering "performance features" for templates, making them as lite as possible yet NI don't even make KK suitable for performers in the fact you cannot make any kind of simple set list, you cannot even save your loaded instrument + FX chains so almost all the target of KK is designed for studio use, and from my experience and literally thousands of conversations with all kinds of producers and musicians over the years, most want access to more than just the basics especially since in many cases, things like the amp envelope aren't even mapped so you can't even adjust the attack/release of a loaded instrument.Anyway, UVI libraries never change so there is usually nothing to update, what has been done will always be there.

Oh I agree. Not every one has Falcon, whereas UVI Workstation is free. I realize I'm an outlier here so if it's important enough to me it will be up to me to dig in and figure that out on my own.
Regarding not being able to save loaded instrument + FX chains, is that right? I'm pretty sure I can load an instrument and preset and then add effects to it and then save that as a new preset in Komplete Kontrol and it will be recalled with the complete chain I set up? Am I misunderstanding.
Again… thanks for what you do. I've bought several of your NKS support libraries, and after I just bought the upgrade to the Sonic Bundle, I'm going to be needing a lot more starting with the Vintage Vault 4 one.0 -
Maybe check again, KK does not save instrument + FX chains, only instrument presets or FX presets. Can also not automate FX from a DAW when loaded within KK.
Both have ben asked for since the feature was implemented but we know where user requested features end up… 🗑️

Wow… I stand corrected!! Just tried it. I guess it seemed like such a no-brainer feature, I just took it for granted! It seems ridiculous that it can't at least recall a combo of VI + FX!! I guess I'd need to use something like Blue Cat Audio PatchWork for that. What's interesting is I think have used PatchWork as an instrument inside NKS before to get around this. Man… that is a silly limitation!

Oh nice 3.4.1 regrew enough bwain to restore my 25K lost presets.
It's still flakey hokey…I mean, what sort of rocket science is this? It could be the worst codebase in history of course being this old. But really? AI should be able to code things this simple by now. Vibe recode the whole thing one shot. Maybe I'll do that myself.

Now Available: Cherry Audio KR-55C NKS Library
The Cherry Audio KR-55C Drum Machine NKS Library for Komplete Kontrol / Maschine contains presets in NKS compatible format for all factory content that comes with the KR-55C instrument.
Each preset has detailed controller mapping, sound preview as well as library database and artwork files to integrate KR-55C into your NKS user or factory library.
Files are tagged and are also provided as 2 selectable banks with Sync enabled/disabled to allow the internal sequencer to load so you can sequence the internal patterns, or non-sync mode allowing programming of beats via your DAW.
The "Multi-Out" version of the plugin has been used for this library which allows both the stereo mix via the standard channel 1/2 output but all other drum outputs are available to send to discrete tracks in your DAW for external mixing. Refer to the KR-55C reference manual for channel assignments (which are fixed)
