Upgrades and drive space

I would like to know for the purposes of saving Disk space, When you upgrade a product does it removes the old version of that product? in order not to take up drive space? In my situation, I have Komplete 13 Collectors edition but I may updrage that to the latest version in the future. I dont want the new install to take up drive space alongside the Komplete 13 collectors edition install. what would be the best practices to achieve my goal?

Old plugins and content will be updated to new ones. It doesn't install the same content as a separate install. 95% of the content is just reference sample data which can work between versions.
