Komplete Audio 2 requires replug after sleep on macOS

Hello. There was already the discussion on the topic, but regarding Komplete Audio 1 (see https://community.native-instruments.com/discussion/21316/komplete-audio-1-requires-usb-unplug-replug-after-sleep-or-reboot). The author closed the discussion, even though the problem was not solved. He assumed this was an Apple problem, some security needs, without explanation. I don't have such assumptions, and would expect a fix for this. I don't understand why the mentioned discussion was closed, and want to ask about the fix. Thank you in advance.

Discussions are closed automatically after 6 (i think) months of inactivity. Or, we close them if they don't serve no purpose anymore. But a user, can not close his discussion. In this case, discussion was closed automatically. However, we can re-open them, if necessary.

About your issue: There is no advice, apart of disabling sleep mode! This is a fundamental audio standard "rule". Audio and sleep mode is a "no, no, no"! One of the very first things we usually do on any new computer is to disable such things. It is out there as standard advice on every "audio performance tips" guide, by Native Instruments (but also Steinberg, Logic, Ableton and almost everyone else).

There are alternative solutions of course (such as to keep USB alive while computer "sleeps" -this is critical since most devices are USB-) and i could helped you if you was a Windows user but for Mac i have very limited knowledge.

I would also add - in this case - Apple controls everything from the OS to how it's hardware manages all peripheral devices - which this audio interface is.

A better plan is to ask Apple why it does not work.

Thank you, Sunborn, for your reply and clarifying why the discussion was closed. I checked out the link you provided, and it strictly is about Windows. Either way, this is my personal computer, and I want to have an ability to put it to sleep. I do this deliberately.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find any option in the Settings, that would seem to help. Currently, I use the device simply for general playback and simple audio recording, so this is likely the only place that is suitable to tinker with.

Vocalpoint, I wouldn't be surprised if Apple enforced some policy on powering devices after sleep. Despite, I would expect a company creating the device, to know the cause of the issue and, if the case, why it cannot be solved. If it is due to some lacking API on Apple's part, I suppose Native Instrument's engineers are in a better position to discuss it with Apple. Aren't they?

NIs job is to build a device that does audio across millions of configurations out there. Using standard normal power configurations.

Been doing audio for 25 years now - have never seen sleep mode do anything positive when it comes to any connected device.

Best to just use the standard power switch and save yourself the agony.

I don't feel competent to answer for them, but I suspect that both NI and Apple would care for the same reason: to enable a customer to use their device conveniently.

I lack such long experience in audio as you. Likewise, I am rather casual user. Perhaps from this come our different views on the topic.

I consider sleep mode to be standard and normal power configuration. It has been present and used on all major operating systems (macOS, Windows, popular Linux distributions) for many years. I would like to emphasize, that I do not expect the interface to work in the sleep mode, but after getting out of it. I consider waking to be an inverse of sleep. I hope you do not consider this unreasonable.

Me neither, but I also didn't see it do anything negative, just neutral. This is the first time I remember that is not the case.

But this device is from 2019. It is an old USB 2 device whose lifespan is most likely rolling rapidly towards retirement.

Devices this old do not usually get any major changes.

If this sleep requirement is a hard yes for your environment - you might consider seeking a better device that meets your needs.

That is right, it is old, but I am unsure whether this is very old for an audio interface. Native Instruments does not offer a more modern substitute. It is still sold and in production. Thus, I expect the support to be ongoing. To be honest, I don't see it lacking because of age, apart from USB-B instead of USB-C.

I also don't consider fixing it a major change. Rather, just a fix for a bug that should not exist.

One could argue that the discussed issue is not that big of a problem, because the new Apple computers consume very little power, so they could be kept awake. Although the power consumption is not very high indeed, keeping your device awake can lead to premature parts failure. For example, the Mac mini M4 has the fan's RPM at least at 1000 and hardly ever goes significantly above it. Keeping it awake 24/7 would make it run significantly longer during its lifetime.

Additionally, putting a computer to sleep has a nice effect of unpowering the audio interface, so that all the LEDs are inactive. Otherwise, not only the LEDs emit light constantly, but are also flashing depending on the volume of the surroundings.

Well - what you do not consider old - others do.

I will also venture a guess that hard internal Q&A on any type of "sleep mode" regardless of system or use case - is not high on any vendors testing list.

Audio interfaces have a power switch for a reason. If a device DOES work via Sleep mode - I would consider that an unplanned (and untested) bonus - not a bug.
