has something changed on the activation process on the most recent versions of Kontakt and Battery?

Hello,
if I update Kontakt and Battery to the most recent versions via Native Access, both applications present me a dialog with the choices to open the applications in demo mode, activate them using Native Access or to buy the program.
When I open the "about" window after I choose the demo mode, a lot of question marks appear as serial numbers instead of the real serial number. When I open Native Access through the app, the applications appear as installed.
Re-installing the applications does not solve the problem, but in the case of Kontakt it appears as registered again if I downgrade it to 7.10.6 or earlier. Not tried with Battery yet.

Did you also get an actual license? I mean… if you have Komplete (and Kontakt 7) then you need an upgrade license to use the full Kontakt 8 environment.

I don't have a Kontakt 8 license, but I speak about Kontakt 7, Version 7.10.7. This update is offered to my by Native Access and if I update, Kontakt thinks it is not registered in contrast to the information in Native Access.

What OS are you running. And what version of Native Access?

Windows 11 with Native Access 3.8.0.
I remain at NA 3.8.0 because the newer versions list everything as uninstalled. I can install software with it and it is still listed as uninstalled even after the (re-)installation. Another problem.

No such thing as v3.8.0.
Current Native Access = 3.1.7:
If you are not running the latest - you cannot expect things to work correctly.

@Vocalpoint It's 3.17.0 - not 3.1.7. 3.8.0 actually did exist once.

Whoops!. My bad.
Still do not really understand this post. 3.8.0 was a long long time ago.
However - if that is the only version of NA that the OP is leaning on to arrive at what appears to be a "sorta/kinda" working environment - there are more serious issues with his/her setup - especially with any mention of "demo"
Suggest the OP contact support to really solve this as it sounds very suspect compared to a known good environment that should work normally with v3.17.0

Nothing changed in the process. Do you use any app like CCleaner or other property list/registry editors? Please read the following: Notes on Using Registry or Property List Cleaning Utilities
