Problem: no sound

I use Komplete Kontrol and a Kontrol S88 Mk2.
On my old laptop everything was all right.

Sinds a few days I have a brand new laptop, a HP Spectre.
I installed all my NI software using Native Access.
When I use the Kontrol S88 with Kontrol, I see all the instruments on my Kontrol S88. When I scroll through the list, the example sound is heard. When I select the instrument and play on my S88, it will not make any sound. (Speakers work well with other programs, for example Spotify) Also no sound when playing the virtual keyboard on my screen.
Same issue with the other NI programs: Kontakt, Massive, … : no sound.
(The nki-files seem to be addressed right. )

How can this be solved?

Thanks again for your thoughts, PoorFellow.

I am somewhat reluctant to change properties of the Windows system using software that is unknown to me. You got me thinking in the right way and I went through a number of different possibilities within the NI programs and was able to fix the problems.

Check if you have installed the keyboard properly on the OS and that your Midi settings are OK including selecting the keyboard in the Komplete Kontrol app.

Thanks for your answer and your thoughts. I'm afraid that the problem is neither the S88 nor the midi. The S88 is recognized in Kontrol and the S88 works fine with Cubase sounds. Also, when I use the virtual keyboard in Kontakt, there is no sound here either.

It was a midi settings issue, at least at Kontrol. Not everything works yet, but within Kontrol this seems to be fixed now. Thanks.

What drivers have you selected for the N.I. apps ? are you using same drivers as for the Cubase DAW ?

Also, when I use the virtual keyboard in Kontakt, there is no sound here either.

And you can still hear example sounds in Konrakt when scrolling through the list ? or is this in Komplete Kontrol ?

Immediately it all sounds to me as a sound driver issue of some kind.

This in particular again to me suggests some sort of driver or Windows audio setup issue of some kind. (With respect to Windows audio then Windows has a lot of settings other than simple mixer settings and navigating it all can sometimes be difficult)

For some types of audio problems then using the "VOICEMEETER BANANA Advanced Mixer" (it's free/Donationware) appear as the solution, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that this were one of those occasions.

Prior to attempting to use this software then please preferably take a full image based backup of Windows so that you can revert any actions that you are unhappy with. Or at very least manually make a Windows restore point. Windows audio is strange best and one can sometimes end up in situations where restoring settings are OK.

You can also first try and Disable Exclusive Mode in Windows Sound Settings to see if that helps :

Right-click the speaker icon in your system tray and select Sounds.

Go to the Playback tab, select your active audio device (e.g., your speakers or headphones), and click Properties.

Go to the Advanced tab.

Uncheck both options under Exclusive Mode: (Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device and Give exclusive mode applications priority)

Click Apply and OK.

I disabled the Exlusive Modes for all audio devices. This action does not seem to have affect.

New information: the sounds in Kontakt are distorted. Both with ASIO via Yamaha output and with Wasapi on the laptop speakers

Try changing the drivers for the onboard sound on the computer if utilizing that , best usually is the direct download from computer manufacturer. Windows update drivers sometimes produce problems where manufacturers do not. With respect to the Yamaha CI2+ (USB ?) if utilizing that then that is beyond what I have knowledge about. However please notice that if USB attached then that opens an entirely different can of worms since that introduces a whole other line of error sources from drivers and USB settings to direct hardware related problems.

Generally then I will still suggest try using the "VOICEMEETER BANANA Advanced Mixer" (it's free/Donationware) as the solution. And maybe try use the ASIO for that ? The VOICEMEETER BANANA can sometimes fix problems by allowing people to route their way of of problems , though it ought to be said that it can advanced to use.

If the problem is related to the use of the Yamaha CI2+ (?) then of course you can also try and seek support for that.

You are welcome and thank you for providing feedback. 🙂 With respect to the use of unknown software then I completely understand why I also suggested the backup. But I will still suggest a full image based backup of Windows now that sound actually works. I have seen really advanced Windows audio problem after having had equipment connected to which there were no solution other than reverting Windows to a previous state.

I am not sure exactly what part of what I wrote that helped but feel free to mark the post as the best answer.

P.S.

If you know what exact setting in Windows that fixed the problem then it would be great if you could share that also so that can be added to list of things to check 🤔
