So... does Komplete Kontrol mk1 just not work with Ableton 12/11?

I just got an mk1 second hand and upgraded to Ableton 12. When installing the MIDI remote scripts Ableton tells me that the scripts don't support Live 12. I know that NI has disontinued support for mk1… does that mean it's just a paperweight for Live 12 beyond the basic keyboard midi functionality?

Even in Live 11 I could only get it half working though, and I thought that at least was supposed to be supported?

I'm on Komplete Kontrol 2.9.6, the last ver before mk1 support stopped. Firmware is latest (actually shows higher number than latest and says theres no update). When I installed the midi scripts in Live 11, Ableton's MIDI settings still did not show the mk1 as a controller I could select, only mk2, mk3, Kontrol A, and Kontrol49. It auto selects mk2 and the keyboard keys work but that's it as far as host integration goes.

Has anyone gotten this working, even partially? Am I just out of luck? This is so disappointing. I'm willing to go back to Live 11 if I have to, but it seems like even there it doesn't work? I have looked at all of NI's guides, the mk1 manual, and searched Reddit.

There have been indeed changes in Live which affect remote scripts.

The technical explanation: the embedded Python interpreter has been updated to version 3.11.6. Because of this, remote scripts that use compiled byte code (.pyc) need to be recompiled using this python version to work properly with Live 12.1.

This change was made by Ableton, without our knowledge (we found out via Reddit), and has impacted several Maschine controllers too. We will be fixing it there - but Kontrol S MK1 controllers are no longer officially supported, and unlikely to receive this fix.

    THANK YOU

The test scripts package included a script for MK1 and this has seemingly restored host integration functionality as far as I can tell in my 30 seconds of testing just now (or at least, the transport buttons now work when they did not before)

”but Kontrol S MK1 controllers are no longer officially supported, and unlikely to receive this fix”

Here is the first sentence proving that what we were predicting when they answered “you can still use your MK1 like you were before, just you will receive no new features” was true

    Hi Native,
I recently found out that Ableton Live 12 is not supporting the komplete kontrol S49 MK1 anymore. Ofcourse Ableton has a role in this too. My question is how is it possible that a product I bought 9 years ago is now useless in my setup. I am forced to buy a new Komplete kontroller now which I think is not very sustainable. Can you give me an offer for a hardware upgrade? I have been supporting your products through the years but find it hard to believe that a piece of hardware is now useless after 9 years. if I buy a MK3 now how long will it last into the future, maybe it is good to mention that when you sell your hardware to customers. Please give me some advice. Thanks! Best,
    Jobbe

    Hello Native,

I have contacted Ableton technical support team and this was their reply:

    Hello,

    Thank you for reaching out.

The reason your Komplete Kontrol S49 MK1 is not working with Live 12 is that its control surface script has not been updated. Live 12 requires control surface scripts to use Python 3, but the script for your keyboard is still based on Python 2. We recommend contacting Native Instruments' technical support team to inquire about any plans to update the script for this controller.

Let us know if you have additional questions.

    Best Regards,

    XXXXXX

Can you advise in this matter and is it possible to create a surface script which uses Python 3?

    Hope to hear from you.

    Best,

    Jobstr

Have you tried using the Updated Scripts inc Studio.zip that Matthew_NI posted above ? , Quote Mykejb: Follow the instructions in the link for "Maschine - Ableton Live 11 Template", but copy the MIDI scripts to your Ableton 12 installation rather than the Ableton 11 installation. How to Install MASCHINE Templates for Ableton Live – Native Instruments (native-instruments.com)
