How to fix an issue of repeated notes not playing back?

I use Dorico 4 Pro + Kontakt 7.1.5 + Spitfire Solo Strings Cello.

Windows 10.

Whenever a note immediately repeats, with no gap between the notes in the piano roll (but also no overlap), every repetition is just skipped. So, even with consecutive repetitions, only the first note is played.

[see picture] The midi moderator does NOT show a "Note On", it only shows a "Note Off" at the start of the skipped notes; all controller values afterwards are set to 0.

Changing the "Accept All Notes on/off" setting in the Instrument Options doesn't change anything. Increasing DFD preload buffer size doesn't change anything.

I think the problem is in Kontakt because this problem doesn't occur when using midi or Halion Sonic with different instruments.

Don't wanna step on UWE's toes here, but I tested it and the last 1/8 in the bar does overlap. Shortened and back in business.

Uwe can confirm when he gets a chance.

I've run into this many times. I tested it with VSL Cello. I also tested it with Cubase Monologue with the same result.

Dear Gee_Flat,

That is strange, because the notes don't overlap in the piano roll (Dorico doesn't overlap consecutive notes to begin with unless you use "Change length of legato notes to 105%"). Would be quite a bother to manually shorten all repeated notes.

I guess it's a translation problem between Dorico and Kontakt?

ok good you´ve tested it i totally oversaw the dorico part and i don´t own it, so i could only test it in cubase.

I overlooked the Dorico part too haha. Point is, I got the same result in Cubase. And I've had to fix these overlaps 1000 times over the years.

Imagine it being the fault of one of the most used soft-synths in the world...anyway!

All the notes overlapped in your example. You were right though, because It didn't happen with the sounds I testeed in Halion.

I don't use or own Cubase, but I'll have to try out a similar approach when I get home:

There's a couple of weird things going on though.

1. It's not an imported MIDI; Dorico (or something) created the problem itself.

2. I was wrong in my OP: midi instruments do indeed have the same problem. Which makes it strange HALion doesn't have this problem, for me nor for Gee_Flat.

3. The problem does NOT occur when I turn off the custom Expression Map for Spitfire Solo Strings that I got from an official (mod) post on the Dorico forums. Expression Maps are what Dorico uses to assign music expressions to keyswitches/controller switching, in this case UACC (requires "Lock to UACC" in Spitfire's own instrument options in Kontakt). However, I can't find anything inside the Map that would affect/alter note durations... I guess I'll have to dig deeper here as well.

So I'm still unsure whether it's a Dorico problem or a Kontakt problem (although, like Gee_Flat, I've had similar issues with Kontakt way in the past). Or the combination of the two.

It appears to me — a layman — that Dorico is messing up the midi by overlapping notes, and Kontakt is messing up by not being able to process this on a polyphonic instrument, while HALion IS able to (which baffles me, since it gets the same midi input), but I don't know enough about either to be sure about anything
