A61 is recognized by Reaper, but does not control the Kontakt software when opened in a session

After moving my studio, I've run into this issue when setting everything back up. Reaper recognizes the A61 controller via USB, I've installed all the NI and Reaper updates. However, when I open Kontakt as a plugin within a session, once I load any instrument from the library, the keyboard will not control the software. Clicking on the keys shown on the monitor does "play" the chosen sound, but the controller does not.

I've researched the MIDI 2.0 issues others have had in Windows 11, I've also updated all the C++ patches as well. I'm looking for other ways to troubleshoot this so I can get everything operating again - any guidance would be very much appreciated.

I am slightly confused , as far as I know then the A61 is not able to have direct control of Kontakt as other than a pure Midi controller. If you want to directly control Kontatk 7 and 8 with the keyboard as other than Midi then you need a S-Series MK3 keyboard. Else for the A61 keyboard to act as other than a Midi controller then you need to open Komplete Kontrol.

Also for both Kontakt and Komplete control to work with the A61 keyboard then you should run the stand alone app version and then setup both audio and Midi in the stand alone app.

I think that you need to give an exact use example and also include screenshot of KK Midi settings as well as an explanation of your Windows Midi dispositions , to me personally then Midi 2.0 use at this point in time appear as if asking for trouble and not something to do unless that you have a specific reason to use it where you very much need it.

@Thunderbroom Please check in Komplete Kontrol in standalone. Are you able to browse, load, play and control a preset there? Please share a screenshot of your MIDI inputs in the app's preferences.

Please note that the Reaper integration is not an official one. Have you implemented anything in that area?

@Jeremy_NI , The controller does not work in standalone mode. I've attached screenshots rom the controller setup in Reaper as well. (I understand there is no official integration with Reaper, but it has worked well for me for several years until now). Hopefully these pics can help? I am simultaneously trying to get help with this from the Reaper community as well. Let me know if I can provide anything else, and thank you for your guidance.

Having just gone through a very painful exercise getting my S61 MKIII going in Komplete Kontrol a couple weeks back - what do you have for NI Services running (See Task manager) - IN standalone mode?

Keeping Reaper out of the equation for the moment so we can focus on standalone - I can tell you with 100% certainty - if Komplete Kontrol does not look like this once it is onscreen and ready:

Where you can actually see your A61 connected - in the two places noted in that screencap - you do not have the required services running for your board to be talking to KK.

I have never used an A61 but I will assume it should be displayed in a similar way that my S61 is as above.

As already suggested by VocalPoint then you need to focus on getting things to work in standalone version of Komplete Kontrol first prior to using in any DAW. If it will not work in standalone mode then it very likely will not work in a DAW either..

OK! I got the controller working in standalone by running as administrator (screenshots of the Kontrol setup attached). It's still not working within the DAW (Reaper). Any suggestions as to what I should attempt next?

Unfortunately for Reaper - my understanding is that even today - this DAW is not officially supported

I don't think that you should check-mark the "Komplete Kontrol A DAW" in Komplete Kontrol Midi input or output setup. The "Komplete Kontrol A DAW" is for setting in your DAW setup.

Use the Play button on the Sweetwater page in section Midi Preferences .

For the general principles of how to setup your keyboard with your DAW then please refer to the how to setup Kontrol A series with Ableton Live

For how to setup Reaper with a Komplete Kontrol keyboard then please refer to the Rea Kontrol page. As VocalPoint writes then Reaper is not officially supported.

Also , for what it is worth the Google AI spat out the following which might or might not be helpful for Reaper setup :

To set up your Komplete Kontrol A-Series keyboard (A25, A49, or A61) for basic MIDI play in REAPER, plug in the USB cable and enable the device under Preferences > Audio > MIDI Devices by right-clicking the device and selecting Enable input. For transport and mixer integration, install the ReaKontrol extension. [1, 2, 3]

Basic MIDI Setup

Open REAPER.
Go to Options > Preferences > Audio > MIDI Devices.
Look for Komplete Kontrol A under MIDI inputs.
Right-click the device and choose Enable input.
Right-click it again and choose Enable input for control messages if you want basic control data.
Click Apply and OK.

Advanced Transport & Host Integration (ReaKontrol)

Download the plugin file from the official ReaKontrol website (Windows users need reaper_kontrol.dll, Mac users need reaper_kontrol.dylib).
Open REAPER's resource path via Options > Show REAPER resource path in explorer/finder.
Open the UserPlugins folder. If it does not exist, create it.
Drop the downloaded reaper_kontrol file directly into the UserPlugins folder.
Go back to Options > Preferences > Audio > MIDI Devices and ensure that the specific Komplete Kontrol A DAW MIDI port is disabled for input and output (ReaKontrol hijacks and handles this port automatically; leaving it manually enabled will cause a conflict).
Restart REAPER. [1, 2, 3, 4]
