Creating a midi signal with a reaktor button

I'm trying to trigger a midi note using a button, to send to another device, but it only seems to work if i have an envelope and oscillator connected. The signal sends to the device fine, but as soon as i disconnect the audio in reaktor, the midi note is no longer produced. It feels like a bug - it's driving me mad!

This is not a bug. It is actually a fundamental part of how Reaktor’s engine manages CPU resources. What you are experiencing is due to Reaktor’s automatic smart suspension (or voice-level optimization).

Reaktor is designed to save CPU by shutting down processes that aren’t actively producing or manipulating sound. If a macro, instrument, or structure has no connection to a final audio output (the main Out ports of the ensemble), Reaktor assumes that part of the structure is idle or unused. As a result, it stops processing events (including your button press and MIDI out data) in that specific signal path. When you connect the oscillator and envelope to the audio output, Reaktor realizes the signal path is "alive" and processes everything, which allows the MIDI note to slip through.

You can bypass this behavior by using 2 or 3 different methods (depending on how you prefer to build), however, i need to search to give you a correct answer and i can not right now. I will try to do it tonight or tomorrow morning. :-)

Yes, Sunborn is right. You need to connect the button to something that is active where Reaktor thinks it's in use. You can connect the button the input of a multiplier with a zero on the other input and attach it to something that is active. The output will remain zero at all times anyway. If anything it will send an event downstream. If you are using core, you can insert a duplicate filter after the multiplier. That will stop the event after initialization. Then you can connect your midi out to the button and it should work.
