Maschine 3 Custom Thumbnails/Images

Finally got the chance to import all of my Maschine 2 content over to Maschine 3 and have noticed all of the custom images for User Sounds, Groups, and Samples are now gone. So are the artwork from 3rd party vendors.

Has anyone found a workaround to do Custom Images on Maschine 3 yet? Looks like editing the images folder doesn't work the same way as it did before.

This has been broken since the release of V3, 2 years ago. NI does not seem to acknowledge it in any way.

I assume that since they seem to be working (?) on some kind of unification of the thumbnails across NA, KK, Kontakt and Maschine mentioned here by Jeremy, until this system gets updated and it works well with their own products, we wont see it fixed for our personal custom images… Just an assumption tho…

One solution is to edit the .db file, but you will need some understanding of SQL databases, a user describes it here.

I managed to fix it with a python script that injects a propperty into the user libs that make Maschine 3 think they're NI user libs, but installing python and using commands is not something the average user cares about so it's sitting around in an older computer, not worth sharing.

This happens because Maschine 3 creates its own database and often defaults the "Vendor" field for user content to "Other" or "Native Instruments," which breaks the file path to your custom icons.

Many users have found success by copying the database file directly from the Maschine 2 folder to the Maschine 3 folder. This forces Maschine 3 to look at the exact paths used by your previous version. So, if you still have your Maschine 2 database, try this:

Close Maschine 3.

Navigate to the AppData folder:
Windows: C:\Users[YourName]\AppData\Local\Native Instruments\Maschine 2
macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Native Instruments/Maschine 2

Find the file named komplete.db3 (and optionally plugin.data).

Copy it into the corresponding Maschine 3 folder in the same directory (Back up the original Maschine 3 komplete.db3 first, just in case).

Restart Maschine 3.

Something else you might want to try to "fool" Maschine by using its own limitation:

If the database swap i mentioned in previous comment doesn't work, you need to manually place your images in the new directory structure Maschine 3 expects!

Maschine 3 is more sensitive to the Vendor name (which, for our custom works, now is "Other").

Locate your custom images: They are usually stored in:
- Windows: C:\Users\Public\Documents\NI Resources\image
- macOS: /Users/Shared/NI Resources/image
The workaround:
Move all your custom image folders into a sub-folder named Other inside the NI Resources\image directory. 😉
- Path Example: NI Resources/image/Other/[Your_Library_Name]/MST_artwork.png

It might be annoying to see your works as "Other" but at least you should have images…

that thread seems to have some old info. The latest versions of Maschine 2 use the PAResoyrces folder, not NI Resources for ex.

The kb3 edit does fix sample organization vendor names, but does not fix the image association issue. The vendor and vendor tags are both correct already for sounds, groups, and instruments.

Which tags does your python script modify?

It single or batch modifies stuff like vendor, author, comment, forces product name, fixed the vendor issue and fixed thumbnail issue.. at the time, now I'm not sure. I found it and tested it real quick and it did fix the vendor problem but the thumbnail not so much but i couldn't get the thumbnail to work on Maschine 2 neither so, its probably me not remembering something.

Anyway, in technical terms the key is adding a GEOB description that NI uses for their own Expansion Samples, not actually a "tag", that fixes everything, or at least it did when i did it a year ago. Ussually i have fun wit this stuff but atm i got a new job and not much free time.

This works, main issue is if something triggers the db file to regenerate you have to to do it again, not sure what does that but probably new products installed, re-scans, etc..

This works too, main problem is for people who got many packs having everything bunched together as "other" is a major downgrade in terms of navigation, speed as aesthetics but better than nothing!

i ended up setting up a symlink that redirects paresources to ni resources combined with a script that modifies the Komplete.db3 to reflect the correct Vendor, Entry 1, 2, and 3. I don’t have “other” anymore and artwork is working as expected. Once I get the script tidied up and refined, I’ll post it on my github.

for some reason, images for groups and kits polls the paresources folder instead of the ni resources folder.

Will do.

Will probably turn it into a full Maschine database management app, tbh. It will be a fun project.
