Setting up a Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol S49 MK2
Hi, I've just bought a Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol S49 MK2 to evaluate.
I plugged it in to my DAW via USB, nothing, so I realised I might need to download some drivers. Did that and now Cubase recognises the MIDI input.
This has allowed me to check out the feel of the keyboard and pitch and mod wheels. Very nice too. :)
However, (apart from the two octave buttons )none of the buttons light up, and the two displays just show "Komplete Kontrol" and "Smart Keyboard Controller" respectively.
Now I do realise there's some more software to install, but this requires registering the product, and I've bought the keyboard on the understanding I can return it should it net met my needs.
So the question is, what do I need to get basic functionality without havig to register the product and invalidate my return?

For the N.I. keyboard to really be at it's best then you need to install the drivers and the software.
The drivers are here : KOMPLETE KONTROL S-Series MK2 Driver 5.0.0 - Windows 7 and above
With respect to the software then the keyboard connects to Windows as midi controller only until that you run the Komplete Kontrol app. With respect to that then a while back N.I. made some policy changes so that it is possible (I frankly don't know) that the free Komplete Start no longer comes with the Komplete Kontrol app , there were some chatter suggesting that a while back. Komplete Start is the free software, but by registering the keyboard you ought to receive a free copy of Komplete Select on your account.
On the subject of registering the keyboard then you will need the previous owner to make a transfer of the hardware serial (Quote Matt_NI : All you need to know about License Transfer) , if the previous owner can not do that then you will have to contact N.I. Account Support with proof of purchase and HW serial and ask for help (I got a recipe for that too) .
Else before you install all the driver and software and run the Komplete Kontrol app then you can only use the keyboard as a midi controller and while it may be a nice enough keyboard then it is the software integration that really makes a N.I. keyboard shine.

If it is just about testing: Get Komplete Kontrol and Komplete Start. Maybe add Kontakt Player and Reaktor Player. These are all free downloads that just require a Native ID.

Thanks for replying maniacintosh81, How do I get a Native ID? Does that involve registering the Komplete Kontrol S49 MK2 ?
Also I already have plenty of VSTi's installed in Cubase, and I'm assuming it should work on any of them?0 -

Hi thanks for replying PoorFellow,
in respect to registering, I should have been clearer before: The product is new, I bought it from a dealer with the intention of returning it if it doesn't meet my need. So it's currently not registered.
As aid above I've already installed the Komplete control Driver called "Komplete Kontrol MK2 Driver Setup PC.exe".
So currently I have a product in which the keyboard, pitch and mod wheel and octave buttons work and nothing else. I'd like to evaluate how the controller knobs work on various VST instruments in Cubase, but cannot.
Assuming I have to install some extra software because it's impossible to set anything up from the keyboard itself, I'm quite happy to do that, and have found this page:w-w-w.native-instruments.com/en/specials/komplete/komplete-kontrol-setup/ [wont' let me post the actual link - sorry]
However it's asking me for a serial number (!!!!) in order to download the software. If I enter the serial number that product is then registered and I'm stuck with it.
Can you suggest a solution or find out from NI what the solution is. It seems crazy to only be able to try out a product if I buy it.

As you are registered here in the community you already should have a Native ID - it is the login to NI. You don‘t need to register hardware to do so. Just try to download Komplete Kontrol and Komplete Start at that point you‘ll have to login. If you don‘t have login credentials you tegister at that point.

Hi, I went to download the Komplete Kontrol software (link above in my reply to PoorFellow) but the instructions to do so require the serial number of the product and to register the hardware before I can activate the software
This will invalidate my return as per purchase contract with the dealer.0 -
As I was sure to have registered Komplete Kontrol software before I got my S49 Mk2 (my first NI keyboard) I just tried it with a freshly created Native ID. Could register Komplete Kontrol software to this new account without having to enter any serial at all. No hardware serial required. No NI hardware connected to the device I did it on.
Next step would be to install it with Native Access 2. Can‘t test this now as I have Komplete Kontrol on my computers already.
Don‘t know what you are doing but you don‘t need a hardware serial.
if you used the first link provided by @PoorFellow which leads to Sweatwater: Try using the link from my post. The Sweetwater instructions are right for usual setup of Kontrol keyboards. These are not instructions for getting just Komplete Kontrol. With registering the hardware you get all software for your keyboard - even that isn‘t available for free. But Komplete Kontrol and Komplete Start are free.0 -
Hi there, I'm just following NI's instructions, and unfortunately Native Instruments tells me that not only do I need to enter the Serial Number, but I also need to register before the Software will be activated. [see screenshot]
I don't really have a problem with entering the serial number as long as it doesn't invalidate my purchase agreement, but I cannot register the product as that will invalidate the purchase agreement

Again following the link I provided in my post, get free Komplete Kontrol there and install it via Native Access. Just try it and don't follow some guides. Pulled out an old machine I usually don't use where I hadn't any NI stuff on. It worked I installed Komplete Kontrol without entering any hardware serial.
Again the setup guides are all assuming that you register your hardware. This is the usual way as you get the full software package this way and expect you bought your keyboard to keep it. For example you get Komplete Select with your S49 Mk2 just instead the free Start package. But believe me: You can get Komplete Kontrol software and Komplete Start bundle for free - even if you don't own a single piece of NI hardware. If you keep your S49 Mk2 you should register it as you get some more bundled software with it, which is not free.
If you enter the hardware serial you are registering the hardware and software bundle to your Native ID. If the seller prohibits this registration process for returns you shouldn't register.

As far as I understand your post then you write that you can not download the Komplete Kontrol software. That at least if that is the problem then we have links for that :
Komplete Kontrol 2.9.6 - Last VST2 supported version (preferred by many MK2 users)(Please notice that using an old version of K.K. could possibly give problem opening DAW projects if switching to a newer version later) , else there is also Komplete Kontrol 3.1.0
In case of problems downloading using those links then try logging into Google first and if that doesn't work then try copying to Google drive first .

Hi Poorfellow, thanks for continuing to take the time to help me.
The problem I was having, was being concerned about having to register the product in order to try it out properly, which I'm sure you can understand from the Native Instrument's instruction screenshot below.
However, from your link above, I've downloaded and installed Komplete Kontrol 3.10, connected the keyboard to my computer and it's come alive :)

You are very welcome. I will second what maniacintosh81 wrote , you ought to get at least the free Komplete Start to help you try out your keyboard. Also please notice that you get Komplete Select added to your account for free when/if you decide to register the keyboard. (click here to see content for Select listed with compare of other bundles also , please notice though that we in the forum expect Komplete 15 to be published in the autumn of 2024.)
Also then you ought to make yourself acquainted with the [NKS] Freelance Soundlabs 3rd Party NKS Libraries for Komplete Kontrol / Maschine thread , JesterMgee from FreeLanceSoundlabs also sells NKS extensions : NKS libraries for 3rd party VSTs: https://freelancesoundlabs.com/nks .
