When recording chords, my recording is not on beat (delayed). Why?

Could be a couple of things (both related to quantization)

It’s possible you have Quantize on record turned on and playing slightly too late (closer to the next quantization point than to the beat) the notes get shifted

    or

You have Quantize on record turned off and you play slightly too late (in this case a very little amount is enough, since the notes are not moved by quantization but recorded exactly where you played them). You can always apply Quantize after the recording in this case.

There is another possibility: if you are confident on your playing skills and you are SURE you are playing on beat, it’s possible the problem resides in the type of instrument (preset) you are using: if the sound you chose has a long (or even not so long) Attack setting, the sound produced will start with a little delay in rapport of when you push the keys (or pads). Check the ADSR settings of the instrument

You have to be much more specific.

What DAW you are using and which Delay plugin?

Quantization? Is a function that shifts the notes to snap to a grid in a predetermined amount (in case the player is not very precise)

Its in fl studio, s61 when I play chords and record them, they're in a different position than the way I played them. If that make since!!

Of course they are, this is a natural delay (and not a Delay FX as i thought at first) and it is very normal on a recording (since you are not a machine).

    You have 2 options:

The first is to enable whatever form of Quantize that FL Studio has (i use Cubase so i can't help you find it). Check the comment by LostInFoundation, for more details. This is mandatory! Even the most skillful, top class musicians is impossible to play always at full synchronization.

The second option is to use the Midi editor (or "piano roll", as it is better known these days -which by the way is a really stupid and meaningless name, if you ask me-), select all the keynotes of your recording and move them in the correct position with your mouse.

Thank you, I'm going to check the snap to grid function.

If you are interested, I can explain you from were the piano roll name comes (which is in facts really meaningfull ☺️)

nope, thanks! ...i prefer "midi editor" (which makes sense because i actually edit midi events) :-)

it is also meaningless if, for example you never use a piano but synths or guitars, or when you make drum kits ☺️

But…in any case the notes are disposed on a piano keyboard…no matter the instrument you use…

Anyway…if you are not interested in the origin, no explanation ☺️. But calling it meaningless is absolutely far far away from reality

It is best to not disagree much with you, so... yeah, piano roll, why not? 😊

...even if in Cubase is called (very wisely) Key Editor!

However... a note on "the notes are disposed on a piano keyboard":

It is actually keyboard, not piano keyboard...

Piano has a keyboard but, not every keyboard is a piano...

Piano is an instrument (not just its keyboard)... this one 😋:

My language is Italian….believe me, I know what a pianoforte is… and piano means something very specific. Not my fault if in English they use words from other languages giving them the meaning they want 😂

In any case, the terminology piano roll comes from something really specific, but since you’re not interested, difficult to continue the discussion. No problem 😉

BTW: this is a keyboard too

Or this one is a keyboard too

But the one we are talking about is a piano keyboard, even when it’s not on a pianoforte
