So, this will be a standalone Maschine with on-board processor and some kind of OS capable of loading VSTs and operating at extremely low latency reliably with a quality audio output, motorised faders etc… Sadly once you decide to put PC hardware into something like this you basically ruin it for the future and create a crippled and less capable version of what can be had already with a controller and a laptop; and who out there is prepared to spend upwards of $10k USD for Maschine workflow?

I mean one can easily dream but reality says this is never going to work especially given the current and future climate… With the landscape of the future being more AI driven, new users will likely be less interested in hugely expensive "toys" and more into prompt driven subscription services, as sad as that sounds for a future that is where things will ultimately end up.

As someone with both design and engineering backgrounds the first thing I would do is ditch those faders for touch strips as that would both take away costly motor driven potentiometers and offer more internal space. Yes it is nice to have touch feel of faders, I prefer that, but that is a huge space and cost factor in the design. You also have to consider footprint since this is ultimately going to be beside other gear that it will want to roughly match in size so as to fit everyone's setups. Considering we can achieve all of this now for less using a Maschine or Push, MCU or XTouch, Midi Fighter or Komplete Kontrol keyboard (offering keys too). I get the convenience desirability of having a single device "do it all", but that is a lot of eggs in a very expensive basket, having modular solutions means switching something out if it fails is less of a headache. You can use a Swiss army knife to assemble a bookcase, open cans, cut small branches, remove fishing hooks…. but seldom does anyone willingly choose to use one for anything if there is another option.

I think we will see the exact opposite of this and a reduction in the dedicated expensive hardware devices on offer over the next 10 years, many devices will be culled as the demand shrinks because of AI. I mean, look at the struggles the once powerful jugganauts in the industry face already (NI being a prime example here). What will be left will be for the actual professional musicians, the whole bedroom producer market that has carried many companies for the last 15 years will die out as kids mess with AI on their phones instead of investing in PCs (which will become more and more expensive anyway)

While it's always fun to see what people feel is "the best idea for a controller" often the cut/paste designs fail to factor in actual reality or even workflow. Sadly I feel the days we all loved experimenting with music and desiring the latest hardware are coming to an end and the "future" of sound will be rehashing music of the last 30 years using AI with zero skill needed.

10.000$ for 8 Motorized Faders ? Hahaha! Nope. 1 Motorized Fader today cost 30-40 $. So 8 Motorized Faders will cost 8 x 35 $ = 280 $.
All Standalone Grooveboxes are a failure, they have lag problems, instability problems, polyphony problens, they are not good.
The MASCHINE MK4 will be a Midi Controller, NOT a standalone device. So it will Not cost 10.000$.
The MACHINE MK3+ standalone it was a failure. Also, the PUSH 3 standalone was a failure. Standalone devices are not good.
The MASCHINE MK4 (MIDI Controller) it will cost around 1.150-1.250 $, so, Not So Expensive.
The Native Instruments idea to Make MASCHINE MK3+ standalone was a failure. Sorry.
Well, closing I'll say : My MASCHINE MK4 Project (Basic prototype idea) is fantastic, perfect, excellent, & it will be the Future of Sound.

Controllers should be "dumb" - just devices to change mechanical actions into performance data.

If you want to make them more complex.. consider aspects of haptic performance feedback.. THAT would be innovative.

Keep displays and "brains" separate… they evolve at that much different rate.

Haptic can be really good. Softube Fader 1 uses it to give feedback on the zero point of the faders. The neat trick is that if they're in fader mode the feedback acts like a notch about 2/3 the way up at the 0db point. If they're in pan mode the notch moves to the centre point of the fader.

The $10k cost (who knows because you haven't detailed anything more than a concept) you seem to overlook some key aspects in your costings such as QUALITY, import taxes, cost to manufacture. While a pretty picture is all well and good, nowhere have you mentioned what kind of OS it would have, what is the internal PC spec proposed with what kind of processor, RAM. Would it need a linux version of Maschine to run in it, what is the audio capability and spec…. What are ANY technical specifications to assist with expectations of actual cost? How you believe it will cost the same as the current Maschine+ is a mystery to me.

I have designed and prototyped hundreds of projects both large scale and small and seldom in my mind as an idea has the costs stuck close to what I hoped, every time it costs more than expected because there are always things overlooked. Something like shipping or import tax or miscalculation on weight, manufacturing, turnaround.

Lets look at real world examples and costs currently:

Akai MPC X which doesn't have half of what you have listed, no faders at all, no Maschine workflow, just a modern sampler really with some plugin synth capabilities which are scaled down plugins designed to run on the limited processor and OS they have: $3300aud

Current Maschine+ while you say it is a "failure" (base on?) let's say it has not really met expectations. The current offering is $1800aud (so about $1200usd) without all the extra encoders, or a powerful PC or any of the extra guff you propose etc. How exactly would this new version offer all this extra, a more powerful computer capable of running I guess Windows (or if to be Linux, many plugins will not work including NIs own plugins) for the same price in the current landscape where chip prices have gone through the roof? At least Ableton had the forward vision to make the PC hardware user replaceable in Push…. but failed to predict that by time of release there would be nothing available to even replace that so the time between development and release is what kills a lot of these ideas.

Like I said, most people on this forum, professionals and experienced users while they may like the idea of a full standalone controller, for reliable and flexible use, having your parts separate and easily upgradable is far better and more cost effective than a single box with everything in it. If you hit some research you will find that once hardware like the MPC/Push reach that $2k mark people question if it is worth their money for ALL the reasons I just said. NI and most companies would likely sell more cheaper hardware controllers to mums and dads buying for their kids than anyone serious enough to build their workflow around these kinds of controllers.

I am a HUGE ableton user and have invested immediately in the Launchpad back for Live 8, Puch 1 pre-ordered when it was in development, Push 2 using their awesome exchange program of the time and when Push standalone was announced I was ready to book an appointment to have my kidney removed to get one… I sat on that idea for a while tho and ultimately decided against it. The idea of creating some ideas "on-the-go" or adding some ideas to my DJ setup was appealing but the limitations, issues and overall cost killed that for me as it is ultimately just faster and more effective to use a computer for the grunt work.

So not to just shoot down your idea for no reason, but just highlighting there are more details needed other than just a design before you can proclaim your idea is a vision of the future, i'm not quite sure anyone so far is on board with this vision from a reality standpoint especially since your projected cost seems totally unrealistic for the claims.

That would be a neat feature for touch controls. ONe aspect I hate with encoders is exactly what you point out, when adjusting like a Pan there is no ident for center and some adjustments are fickle. WOuld be great to have that macOS trackpad style of feedback for a pan or 0db fader setting etc.

I still am not a fan of touch faders for mixing tho because the one thing you just cannot do is blind "takeover" of channels while mixing or tracking automation. You can get things done but it's one reason I just could never get rid of my MCU even tho I use it almost only for adjusting channel levels.

i know they are "both" currently in their best state

take the latest version of the Traktor hardware as an example, …in my view its gone backward to possibly make it affordable

The M series of mac silicons these days are right up there
pushing the boundarys of running multiple audio applications

the idea of better displays on any midi device these days, is a complete waste, given what is occurring in the AR glasses front & thunderbolt connectivity,
Xreal glasses, already provide portability & screen realestate for multiple audio applications… having already done early tests a year or so ago

My suggestion of haptic feedback being the focus of controller innovation stretches pretty far.

Imagine the audio being generated being offered as a source of haptic feedback… (low latency needed!)

Haptic Membrane and string controller surfaces to alter generated resonances with counter pressure
