Changed path for content, but...

I needed space on my C drive, so I moved my NI content from the default to D:/Native Instruments. I could not find that path when updating NAccess, the path that is shown in the Native Access app shows D:/Documents. I did a repair and the the current projects in SO1 are showing as updated, (after I reassign the path when the app is opened in the DAW). Anyway, I'm updating K8 and some others, and I noticed the K8 content folder is not in the D:/NI folder, but in the D:/Documents/Native instruments folder… but there is only a few (33) folders in that dir, with 133 folders in the D:/Native Instruments. K8 did start up properly in the DAW after updating.

Any explanation of this path issue? Is there anything I can do to properly show the paths for future use, or is it just something that "as long as it works, its fine" ?

From your description then it is very difficult to even attempt to get a good grip on what it is that you have done and what it is that has created this havoc.

One problems with how the N.I. databases work is that if you have content on one location and then try to place same content on another location and then have same content on two locations then that can give problems . So you always need to remove or rename old folders when assigning new path to folders.

Also then in some case then if you remove a folder and then try to use an app without another folder has been assigned then in some cases it might assign a default as a folder.

And it is also very difficult for me to ascertain what of the above is DAW and what is N.I. or what part of what N.I. , just saying.

If I had a major screw up on my hands then I would remove it/uninstall all and then 'reinstall it' all. (removing Content does not have to actually delete the content only move or rename folder)

You can then select the root folder of where your libraries are installed on your hard drives. It should add all the libraries found there. You can repeat this for all your drives.

thanks, I followed some guidance on the NI site to move the content… everything runs OK in SO1, but my main question is that when I moved my NI content from the default path to D:/Native Instruments, the path that is shown in the Native Access app shows D:/Documents. I have no idea how Native Access app shows D:/Documents rather than D:/Native Instruments unless you you did something to make the software do this . But if the path is incorrect then that might give problems though if you change the path after installation then N.A. should be able to handle that. However if you have some major install mishap then as I wrote earlier then I myself would fix that and straighten things out by a complete re-install as I wrote above.

Also I don't know if D.\Documents is your Windows document folder but generally then installing anything to the Documents folder sounds as a seriously bad idea…

Just for a frame of reference this is how my directories are specified in Native Access.

Per NI directions you should probably leave the Download Location and Application Location alone as those are used for system processing when installing a new library. Content Location is where the libraries get installed. However, that's ONLY the installation of something being downloaded from NI. It has nothing to do with libraries you move.

When I move an existing library, let's say it was on the C drive. I would copy that library's folder from the C drive to the H:\New Native Instruments directory then I rename the old directory and append '-old' to the end of it to make sure it won't be found, or you could just move it rather than copy it, but I like to be safe until I'm sure everything is working.

Once everything is moved or copied from the original directory then you need to change where Kontakt and/or Komplete Kontrol are looking for it and you do that through the 'Locate' facility in Kontakt for each library as you copy it and point it to your new directory which is a pretty quick operation. Once that's done you can test it in Kontakt to make sure it comes up and functions alright. Once you've done that you can go back and delete the old library directory on your C: drive because it's clearly working from the new drive since the old library's directory was renamed.

It's a bit more of an involved process, but by doing it that way one at a time you know everything is good. Maybe someday I'll trust the whole automated repair facility in Kontakt, but for now I trust myself more.
