Maschine’s Limitations Are Its Secret Weapon

Recently, I tried moving a project from Maschine 3.2 to Reason 13, and unfortunately, I felt like I lost that nice, static mix I had managed to craft in Maschine. Sure, Maschine might not be a full-fledged DAW, and it may not allow for advanced audio operations, but the speed of the workflow and the way it forces you to be creative is just incredible. Nothing inspires me quite like Maschine.

Recording Lock States and then controlling them via MIDI is also an interesting way to explore unusual musical variations. I love Maschine, and honestly, I can't imagine working with any other tool right now. You see, Maschine is one of the very few music-making environments that strikes the right balance between what the software can do, the editing options it offers, and how much it stimulates creativity.

What do you mean by recording Lock States? I haven’t managed to incorporate them to my workflow yet.

You can save some lock states and there is workaround which allows you record changes like notes insides Clips (basically you can arrange them like other patterns/clips) :

What kind of voodoo is this?

The video assumes knowledge of locks. I can follow how to setup everything from the video, but I don't understand what the end goal is…really. I get that it's about locking certain parameters/states, but how is that different to how we can can use momentary states currently?

If you never used Lock States, it is difficult to describe. Many good possibilities there (one over all: morphing).

Surely one of the most underrated and ignored features of Maschine.

I've had some success at getting a reasonably good high level explanations by typing a natural language question into the big G search. For example in this case I typed "what are lock states in ni maschine" into the search box. I'm not sure if everyone will get the same result, but I got this:

Thanks for the reply. As I said, i understand the bit about lock states, but just haven't yet worked out what is being added to the functionality, that's being demonstrated in this video.

I probably just need to re-watch it when I'm more awake.

You can adjust everything directly in the arranger. Lock States are designed for live use, but with these tricks, they can also be useful for arrangement.

I control multiparmeters with two Pads and it's a basic, here is example, from one to another Synths, FX Balance to another from smooth volume fade in to much more complex Automation and Modulations and it's all in standalone mode.

Of course it's not solution for become Pro but it is very strong feature which is making me much easier to get what I want and it's something that every users would benefit.

This is just example, I make it instantly because I was able to do morph of the multiparmeters without drawing or recording Automation and i finished everything (Mastered) in M+ Standalone mode and maybe I made Master too loud, I am not sure but that's what I make in a few days.

It's about sequencing them… Maschine's lock states cannot be put on a on Pattern to be auto triggered at certain points, so people resort to tricks. Hence the tittle "Automate lock states".

Thanks for the repply! This is something I play around every now and then. Usually I incorporete this with extra group that triggers the locks scenes. That way I can rename the pad in a group and that pad triggers a lock state. That is a work around to name the lock states.
The problem for now is that when I go from standalone to daw things work differently. I know it is possible but for now it feels too tricky. Too much friction.
