Best way to stretch samples AFTER chopping them
Hi
I currently use Serato Sample as a VST within Maschine to sample essentially - my workflow is as follows:
- get sample
- chop sample at original tempo of sample
- time stretch the sample and therefore increase/decrease the tempo of the original sample AFTER chopping the sample
- play the final chops out with a drum pattern and work from there
My question is - what is the best way for me to accomplish this within the Maschine software without any external VSTs i.e. using Sampler on its own ideally but am open to using Audio as well? Is it possible to achieve this same workflow i.e. chopping then manipulating all the chops together in one AFTER chopping them?
The reason I ask is that Serato Sampler has a limitation of 32 samples which can sometimes be a limiting factor however the issue I ran into when chopping with the Sampler is that while I could chop more than 32 samples - I would have to manipulate each chop individually - unless I have overlooked something?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

my favorite way of sampling and editing samples in Maschine is to do all my chops in different pads (chop one pad one, chop two pad two etc.), and a this stage I clean up the chops to the transients or zero crossing part of the signal to avoid clicks and pops, maybe come up with the "melody" find the tempo etc… if I need to process all the pads at ones, let's say to pitch them up, I select all the pads and pitch up one of the pads, and that will reflect on all the pads.
in matter of time stretching, my favorite way is to first let the sample decide the bpm of the song, and if I am not happy with it. I bounce it in audio module and change the tempo how I want, and the pitch how I want, but usually the melody/progression of the sample it is already in place. This is my favorite way, it is quick and it forces me to commit to it.
the other way is to stay in the sample module, and in the sampling page, there is a time starching option, but you have to know the starting bpm and the bpm you want, than it will render the chops (I am not sure if you can do it all at once or one by one)
that's all I can say.
I HOPE MASCHINE 3.0 GIVES US THE SAMPLER THAT WE DESERVE! AHAHAH I never used Serato Sampler, but it seems so convenient, I did't buy it for pride hahah I have a freaking drum pad with knobs and what not I refuse to buy it even if is better ahah

There is no best way after slicing, only before and it's quite destructive:
- Use the Audio module with a perfect loop since it does the stretching, then resample it to another Pad, then slice. If you change your mind about the BPM then your out of luck and have to do it all over again….
- You can also fiddle with the terrible (IMO) destructive stretching in the Sampler Edit Page, slice by slice… ouch.
Real Time Time-Stretch in the Sampler (like Serato Sample) has been a top feature request for ages… So another option is to pray that NI decides to add it in Maschine V3.

I kind of wonder what they were thinking when they built the stretch function in the sampler edit page. Like… bros; you want me to math? You let me stretch to bars and beats, but you display in seconds? :confused_emoji:
There a little comic talking about software design. I've seen it in different formats over the years. I understand the stretch function is probably great for loops; especially before the audio module was a thing, but it always kind of reminded me of that little comic.

I do agree!!

If the sound has a prominent transient/attack element its often good to choose an algorithm that will preserve it, leave it untouched.
If its a single tone, note, or melody a monophonic algorithm is often the best choice.
If the sound has multiple notes like a chord, you might want to choose a polyphonic algorithm
If the sound is comprised of a few elements, like its fragment of a sampled song, you would want to consider the most CPU intensive polyphonic algorithm
If you want to create something more experimental then try everything and choose the best sounding result.

I see - thank you all for the ideas - I really appreciate it - I'll probably go with putting the samples on each pad which will give me the ability to SELECT ALL so that I can tune them up/down as required and I wish Maschine 3.0 software has real time stretching - that will be epic.
Salute ya'll!1
