Traktor 4: Mac users are second class clients.

Just purchased my upgraded version of Traktor 4…

I have Traktor 3 running great for years on my macbook Air 2014.

now I just found out I can't install it!

I gotta upgrade my OS so I can update Native Access to install Traktor 4, that will only run on mac OS 12 and above.

I'm on Mac OS 10.14, and i'm a firm believer that you don't update a stable work computer until you really have too.

It turns out I CAN'T update my OS to the version to run Traktor 4!!!!! Apple won't Let me!!

Now please someone please explain to me why does the Traktor 4 windows version runs on a 2015 OS (sindows 10), and on a Mac it will only run on a 2022 OS version?!?!

Gotta buy a new computer just because Traktor can't make it compatible with a perfecly fine mac OS? so why do you do it on windows?

Now I payed for an upgrade I cant use, unless I buy a new mac. This upgrade is way more expensive that it should have been, if Native would treat their Mac users with the same respect they treat their windows users…

Any help for not having to buy a new mac would be greatly appreciated.

As mentioned before from other users here, try OCLP. I just updated my old MBP from 2012 back to life with it. Everything works great so far. No Problems at all with TP4 (on macOS Monterey 12.7.5) and other Applications like Adobe CC, Audacity, Ableton Live, djay Pro, Serato and so on…

By the way, if it's not supported, it doesn't always mean "it won't work" like other use cases before in the NI universe.

Back in the days there were a few workarounds to install older software if i remember correctly. But maybe it depends on the OS, or you're right and im wrong. (Eventually i confusing it and it worked only with drivers and hardware, not apps… will check it later to confirm).

We will see how many people pay for an upgrade then come here to find out they cannot run TP4 on their 2012/3/4 MacBooks. Please don't think I'm bitter about it: I'm really not. I found out two months ago - not today - so I really don't have an issue with it. It may sound like "I did not bother to even look at all." but that's not true in my case, sorry. For others it may be the case and it's a mistake that will cost them money.

For the record, I love TP4 and I'm fully behind NI developing the app by making these decisions.

The build quality back in the days was good enough? Maintenance? No money for overpriced new things? Afraid that a drunk guest will pour his beer over my 4000 bucks machine when one for 400 bucks can do the job?

This isn't directed at you personally, but there are several good reasons why we shouldn't always replace functioning devices just because something newer is available. Save resources and breathe new life into used items is a good thing for me.

I agree, I had the same thing when I purchased the X1 Mk3 and needing to install the new version of native access to register it, also again in the past when my Audio 1 audio interface became unsupported by NI and Apple.

I had a 2012 macbook pro running Catalina and the sales person at the shop didn't mention or didn't even know that it would not work! I also upgraded to Osx 13 ventura using OpenCore Legacy Patcher, and watching a few YouTube videos, but experienced latency with certain things and eventually folded and bought a new M3 macBook

If you do decide to go that route, do some more research, in the end I ended up purchasing a new MacBook Pro as I figured it was time, with the rollout of all the new Apple products coming out and I'm also a user of Logic Pro so I needed a Mac to run the their new features for the most recent upgrade.

I am still hesitant to upgrade to Traktor Pro 4 as I feel the stems and other features are not geared for my style of DJing so far and the Stems in not a big seller for me, TP3 is all I need atm using the X1mk3.

Paying developers to make updates for older versions versus pushing new product would be nice, but not the best business model for profit I guess. And Apple seems to not give to much of a care for Dj's or Musicians needs as much. With all the changes in the DJ market and audio software I'm glad to see Tracktor still in the game, I've been a user since the beginning, but RekordBox is starting to look more and more appealing as an potential alternative.

With Serato, it doesn't work smoothly with "live stems" and outdated systems. For Serato you also need Monterey or higher and a laptop from 2017.

But I'm really surprised that it works for you with a 2014 MBP and djay Pro without stuttering. That doesn't happen for me when I mix externally (with DVS and a DJM-S11). Not even a 2015 MBP with a 3.1GHz dual core i7 and 16GB RAM can do it for me. So I'm going to try it with a controller, I've never thought of that before.

It seems to be an exception in your case, or I'm stressing my system too much with background processes. In addition, the strengths of djay Pro lie in its ability to work across devices. So if you have an iPad or iPhone, you'll need something newer than a device from 2014.

Macs are beasts. And making one a dedicated for DJing only, is the best tool ever. Never had a problem with it in any version of Traktor playing 4 decks in HDI with pioneer CDJs and DJM mixer. Also at the same time with GarageBand playing guitar on top of my DJing. Old macs are so good for this that I have a second macbook air even older (2012 - only 4Gb of RAM) that I use as a backup if something goes wrong with my main laptop... and was NEVER needed yet.

1 need a 1TB SSD for a DJ laptop. both my macs have one. if you can get me a £500 M1 MacBook Air, I'll take 2 of them. Also these new Macs dont let you upgrade anything… so no SSD upgrade

Where? Maybe one with 256GB SSD and 8GB RAM… If you wipe the floor with this one, you will also probably found no tutorial on iFixit to change damaged parts, because you can't.

But you are right that we can buy a new "used" one. That's what I've always done myself. I would never throw so much money at Apple just to have a new device and so I always wait until there are affordable prices on the used market.

But I understand it now. It's not really a discussion if I don't want to see the arguments from the counter part. I'm not excluding myself from it and just want to represent the other side that we don't have to buy alway everything new straight away if it's not necessary. For me, it just doesn't make sense to buy a new "old" MB at the moment, regardless of whether it's a Pro or Air, because i can Traktor 4 run stable and without any problems with my MBP from 2012 with no costs at all. That's it.
