Controller Editor not recognizing my Kontrol S61 MK2
Hi there, I just registered my KK mk2, downloaded the driver and firmware update from NI website. I couldn't installed the firmware. It is 0.6.0 and the firmware available is 0.5.9 so the firmware installer just gives that message. I updated the driver. I downloaded NI Controller Editor and installed it. It doesn't see KK mk2. I restarted the computer and the keyboard and it didn't make any difference. The connect button in the application is greyed out. Is there any NI rep checking these posts or I should reach tech support? I have a feeling that the wrong firmware could possibly created this situation. The keyboard is recognized by Komplete Kontrol software but not Controller Editor. I need to use Controller Editor Zone splitting feature so I have to make it work. I appreciate your help. Thank you.

S-Series MK2 can not be used with Controller Editor . CC @Sunborn (Surprised that you didn't know that)
Quote : My Native Instruments Controller does not Appear in Controller Editor :
Different hardware controllers will allow for different abilities in configuration of their outgoing MIDI Control Changes. If your controller does not appear in Controller Editor, it is due to the reasons listed below:
Hardware Controllers which are configured from their Application
- KOMPLETE KONTROL S-Series MK2
- KOMPLETE KONTROL A Series
- KOMPLETE KONTROL M32
You can access the MIDI Assignment editor by clicking the MIDI icon in the top right of the KOMPLETE KONTROL software when your S-Series MK2 keyboard is connected:
Here you can define what kind of MIDI messages are assigned to the controls of the keyboard in MIDI mode.
About the firmware then version 0.6.0 is the newest for some keyboards (those that shipped with 0.6.0) and the firmware available for download, 0.5.9 is the newest for those keyboards that are made before the keyboards that ships with version 0.6.0. Meaning only if your firmware is lower than 0.5.9 do you need updating .

@PoorFellow actually, i rarely use the Controller Editor, but, when i open it Komplete Kontrol is there! Though only its Midi section…
However, if you want to modify those options, opening the file Komplete Kontrol MK2 Settings.dat with a text editor is a much easier job… 😊

Only works with the MkI keyboards though

Thank you PoorFellow. I didn’t know that. The controller editor is listed in the website downloads after I registered the product so it is misleading to have the download link available. I’ll check to see if I can figure out the zone splitting through KK app.

Thank you Sunborn.

hi Kymeia, so you mean Controller Editor app inherently cannot see that my mk2 is connected, and the only mean of designating keyboard zone is through KK app? That’s fine if that’s the case as long as I can achieve zone splitting that was my only intention to purchase a 61 key instead of 49 key version. It is confusing that the download option was listed. I think NI should filter out unnecessary download options same as many other companies that after you select the product model, it shows you a shortlist of related downloads. Thank you for your reply.

Yes, it only works with MkI keyboards

Thanks. I used the split function but when I go back to KK browser the split is not showing and still I can only load one instrument at a time. I was hoping to get two instrument being loaded and half the keyboard assigned to my be and the other half to the second instrument. Do you know how I can take advantage of two zones in KK application?
Thanks a lot.

I just read another thread that since KK app is a single array architecture, the only way is to use DAW and put KK mk2 on MIDI mode and designate inputs according to the assigned MIDI channels in KK app MIDI assignment page and load dedicated synth / sampler plugin on each track. Not sure if I load one instance of KK app for each track, would I be able to have two instruments playing simultaneously, one for each zone? Also I’m curious if I use the KK mk2 cursors to go up and down would the keyboard display show KK plugin info on the display to adjust the parameters? Or it won’t be able to do it since it’s on MIDI mode not browser mode or plugin mode. I appreciate if you can clarify. Thanks a lot.

Sorry , I have never used key zone splitting and have no working knowledge on the subject and thus it would take me far too long to do a close study up on the topic here.
But have you actually bothered trying to study the manuals ?

hi PoorFellow,
I read through it quickly but I didn’t find what I was looking for. I will do it again just in case I have a different perception now that I started creating zones. For me the disappointing thing is that split is only valid in MIDI mode but I lose the whole purpose of Interactive GUI with the plugins in MIDI mode. Any average MIDI keyboard can do basic communication. I was hoping to take advantage of KK app smart communication with plugin variables while having the zones on the keyboard.
Thanks.

Hi, I also sent my request to NI tech support but so far they didn't have any answer for me. However I found a workaround. Background: I found out that midi assignment mode of KK software allows creating zones. I created a new midi assignment and called it 2 zones. Then in that I splitted the keyboard to two, designated one side to channel 1 and another side to channel 2. In DAW, I created two tracks, added KK plugin to each, assigned midi input of one track to KK mk2 channel 1, and the other one to KK mk2 channel 2. Then I record armed those tracks in Pro Tools (monitoring mode in Cubase) and after fine tuning my sound through KK plugin, I pressed MIDI button on KK mk2 and I used the preset arrow up and down to select 2 Zones mode (split keyboard). I was able to get discrete sound of track 1 KK plugin sound in one side and track 2 KK plugin sound in the other side of KK mk2 keyboard.
Problem: The problem was that for the track assigned to channel 1, I could go back and forth between MIDI mode and internal KK plugin communication by pressing Plugin button on KK mk2, however on the second track (used 4D rotary to move down in DAW tracks), when I pressed MIDI button, it disabled the Plugin and Browser button (not illuminated anymore) so I was stuck on MIDI mode.
Workaround: I created a third track and assigned the MIDI input for what was supposed to be the track with stuck MIDI, moved the KK plugin to the new track, and I could go back and forth between the MIDI mode for split performance and have the plugin / browser buttons stay lit so I could go back to direct communication with KK for sound manipulation. Leaving that sacrificial track was the workaround. I saw exactly the same behavior in both Pro Tools and Cubase. The sacrificial track can even be disabled / hidden, and it still plays its role that the rest of the tracks you can go to MIDI mode with split or multi-zone performance and go back to Plugin mode for sound editing.
Cheers.
