Komplete Kontrol doesn't show up as a VST in ableton

Hello everyone,

Ever since I updated my native instruments library I've been doing a lot of troubleshooting, and the one problem I can't seem to fix is that Komplete Kontrol won't show up as a VST in Ableton.

A quick Google search told me Komplete Kontrol was indeed a VST3, but when that didn't work I copied it into the VST2 location—where everything else seems to be coming from—and it still won't appear, even if I rescan and restart Ableton.

I got it to show up and work from Native Access, and it still connects to my MIDI controller.

Here is what the actual folder looks like, in case there are any discrepancies there.

For anyone seeing this in the future:

In Native Access go to… Preferences —> File Management …and make sure that the Application Location is "C:\Program Files\NativeInstruments" (Default file location). It does not matter where other files go.
In Ableton go to… Options —> Preferences —> Plug-Ins …and turn on "Use VST3 Plug-In System folders" as opposed to custom. Browse to the same location as step 1.

The Native Access file management looks like this:

For some reason, 64 bit won't go directly into my hard drive, so I made a separate folder in the hard drive for them even if there are none of them.

As for the File Management settings used then all I can say is that with settings like that then I am amazed that anything works at all since you are apparently violating more basic rules for installation of the N.I. software. I know that others before have used e.g. external drive path settings beyond recommended but never before something like what you have done.

Personally I would always recommend that apps and all VST be kept at the default location on system drive. Also I'd recommend the use of sub folders. Also a rule I think is that Download folder location ought to be above Content folder location.

P.S. Problems like what you describe above has been seen before when people tries alternative locations for VST3 (which generally is a NO GO). Quote : VST3 doesn't need Registry key/value because plugins are always installed into C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3 (and subfolders), to follow Steinberg convention. I've reinstalled everything using the official guidelines through the "Setting Install Locations in Native Access [VIDEO]" article on the Native Instruments support site. (I can't send a link)

I still don't have access to Komplete Kontrol in Ableton. I've rescanned in Ableton and reset my laptop. I've also tried downloading Komplete Kontrol using all the default locations, which doesn't work. I don't want to have to download everything onto my laptop, as it doesn't have enough space.

What are my next steps for troubleshooting?

Sorry , even if I had more ideas (don't know if I have) then I wouldn't know where to start trouble-shooting when using alternative VST locations or all the possible ramifications of doing so. All I can suggest is that you start using system locations for VST and most certainly for VST 3 . Alternative path settings for VST 3 is a very big NO go.

Else you have to ask N.I. support , but I kind of suspect that they will ask you to use system VST paths at least for VST 3 .

Thank you for returning to confirm that things have been fixed.

What you write however is self contradictory as first you write "make sure that the Application Location is (Default file location)" and then "It does not matter where other files go" and then end up writing "Use VST3 Plug-In System folders" which tells that VST3 must go to system VST3 folder.

All over this forum you find me suggesting that the only folder locations to change in Native Access is Download and Content. And while you might get away with 'alternative' destinations for VST/VST2 then the same is not the case for VST3 , changing the VST3 folder in the first place is know to cause problems. So your problems including the Ableton problem only occurred because you did not follow these rules in the first place.
