Original Owner Won’t Transfer License
Hey there,
Recently bought a Traktor S4 MK3 at a musicians meet up type event. I’m the third owner as the previous owner told me he would transfer the license. Now he won’t respond. Am I able to just operate normally when I buy the software or am I screwed?
Thanks so much

Most importantly is that you include a picture of the receipt and I think also a picture of serial on bottom of device , then ask N.I. Account Support to help.
Registering the hardware ought to give you the base software that came with the hardware (support article explaining)
It is all rather convoluted and difficult to navigate but :
The "resolution that works" is the click through make the right choices to open a ticket : N.I. Account Support
Scroll down to bottom of page N.I. Account Support and log in
Then click the Contact support
Then again scroll down and click the Contact N.I. support that shows
Then yes , damn it ! , then you have to click the Contact N.I. support again
1: Do you need help with the activation or installation of a product?
NO
2: Is your question about License Transfers / 2nd hand purchases? This question is required.
YES
3: We have collected all info around 2nd hand purchases in this overview.
That doesn't help
4: OK. Are you a buyer or seller
Buyer
5 Have you received a License Transfer Token? NO
6 Have you bought it from a shop (Guitar Center, Sweetwater, Thomann, etc.) or from a private person (Ebay, Facebook, etc.)?
Privately
7 Please ask the seller to request a License Transfer Token as explained in this article.
I Can't contact the seller
8 Please upload a photo of the invoice or receipt from the seller.
You have to take the rest from there yourself since I can not start opening empty tickets just to make a guide for you.

Well , I think that that is called having been screwed.
I don't have any unregistered N.I. hardware but it is possible that it can work within the N.I. subsystem while not registered and that you can use it if you have the software installed , but I couldn't guarantee it not having tried so myself. As far as I understand then you can take your N.I. device and use on another account/computer as long as you have any hardware drivers and services needed installed on the computer used.

It will work just fine if you buy the software.

Try to contact support again sending them a picture with the device bottom with the serial and a paper showing the date.
Tell them to ask original owner to do the same. If he just told them he didn’t sell the product and not that it has been stolen and he can’t provide the picture, that should show them that he is lying.
Btw: I don’t understand him, since he would keep the software for himself anyway…

AFAIK you can sell the hardware without the software. In that case having the hardware will not prove anything.
2 -
True that.
But if original owner will retain the software anyway, it just sounds mean not to provide it.
In any case, the hardware in the hands of the new owner is still registered under previous owner account, which doesn’t sound correct.
And NI answered that original owner didn’t say “I sold him only the hw”… he denied he sold it.
In any case, I had a similar experience in the past with a Maschine Mikro, where seller, after promising he would make the license transfer, never made it. NI recognized the hw was in my hands and canceled the registration from his account to allow me to register it (even if they told me they would leave the software available for previous owner even if he beaved incorrectly).
I fear it depends on if you are lucky enough to speak with someone from support willing to be accommodating or if you stumble upon someone who just says “No”

Problem here is that none of us are in a position to pass judgement. We don't know if original owner were burgled or had the device stolen by simple theft. The OP says "I’m the third owner as the previous owner told me he would transfer the license.". But nobody can be sure that last seller told the OP the truth or if last seller also were cheated and originally bought it from a 'fence'. If N.I. contacted whoever the device is registered to and 'registrant' says that he didn't sell it then I don't see how N.I. could possibly legally transfer the device to a new user. Whoever the device is registered to might be telling the truth, could even by original purchaser, but I don't think that N.I. are going to be involved in any disputes if can be avoided .

Of course. But it does seem strange to me that if somebody stole you your device you would deny you sold it instead of saying it was stolen.
In my opinion here the cases can be two: if OP is saying the truth, previous owner sold him the device lying about him doing license transfer because he doesn’t know he would keep the software anyway or he sold a “Not for resale” device (but in this case NI seeing the license would know it)
Or, as you said, he has been cheated and therefore is trying to cheat on his own.
The case of stolen device is more remote, otherwise he would have told it to NI.
In any case, the point here is why NI sometimes decides to help last owner (if he is legit) and sometimes not

Owner I bought it from says he bought it from a pawn shop. He finally messaged me back last night but still never sent any software. Very confusing situation. Most likely will just buy software tomorrow since it seems like I can still use the device. @PoorFellow @LostInFoundation

Who says that he didn't ? I don't think that N.I. are going to be involved in any disputes if can be avoided. So 'denying having sold the device' is a rather broad term if you think about it. Also : Quote OP : "Owner I bought it from says he bought it from a pawn shop.". 'Pawnshop' could by itself mean more scenarios and we don't know anything when it comes to that .
@perrinrs , getting screwed is never a nice experience, and I hope that this experience will not set you back too much. Always be careful when buying or selling secondhand things. There are so many pitfalls these days..

Nowadays, via a NI License Transfer, the seller will retain the original software bundle in his NI user account that originally came with the hardware (non-transferable) while the buyer will get a new set of the bundled software.
