We arent talking about what came before, we are talking about what comes next -- the "cultural changes" being discussed for the future of this customer service forum. I've never been censored, either.
I keep asking for some sort of explanation for what the goal truly is here, but in the end I still see that "shielding what remains of the NI customer support team from angry comments by re-configuring forum rules and/or culture to make it harder for angry customers to be taken seriously" seems to be the primary shift in culture.
Where are all the "trolling" or "rude people", etc, that we are discussing handling? What sort of person is it that you are trying to stop from being part of this community? Its still not clear to me.

Who said anything about running anyone out of town, Milkman? All are welcome.
Look, I can only speak for myself and my goal is/was simple. My hope was that all of us put even a bit more effort into being polite even when we disagree and 2. That the moderation team is a bit more quick to react on those rare occasions when things get out of hand.
And improving users tools as they have laid out is an added bonus.
And for the record, I think that the participants in this thread have been quite relaxed and well mannered and it was certainly not a waste of time.

In my experience a lot of friction is produced when participants are not clear on or don't realize themselves if they want to be understood or if they want to be right (whatever that is). Sometimes the surface expressions and the subtext gets mixed up in a way that is difficult to analyze, especially when the tone has become more forceful and people get defensive. The ability to take a step back seems helpful. On occasion i used the (much appreciated) ignore function for a couple of weeks for peace of mind.
My solution so far has been to try not to accuse anyone of anything.

Shame though that the real world isn't perfect, and that that will hardly calm anyone down.
Why anyone would escalate and freak out like that in the first place about a piece of software on his computer is beyond me anyway. If I am disappointed or annoyed by a software, I simply stop using it, and stop buying subsequently from the company, if all of their software disappoints me.
There's one point that distinguishes me from the people freaking out in forums or social media in that regard: I don't try to convince others of my strange views. And use forums or social media as mediums to agitate. And, that's the whole thing, and what should always be considered.
As I wrote earlier: Try to act as you would do in the real world in forums and social media. That's the art.
Again, though, I don't expect that to happen. Talking about a perfect world vs. a real world.

I hope that everyone realizes that there will always be people who are not following the forum rules, this is nothing new or something that can be affected.
"For a hammer, everything is a nail".
Solution is to have active moderators who will police this kind of users.

The solution to that is to simply not care. Because, just as some people simply won't follow the rules, some other (or the same) people will simply not understand the point of rules at all (which is to make sure that people can peacefully be in one place together).

There was a guy who wrote in German and offended various members who tried to help him, just a few days ago.
I think D-One banned him.
If it was up to me, I would have suspended him for a week or two to allow him to calm down and to familiarise himself with forum rules (including posting in English) and let him back. Next time he would break the rules, I would perma-ban him. If it was up to me ;)
So that’s the kind of people I think about when I write about “angry/rude” people.
Not people like me or you, who are voicing their grievances in a civilised way ;)))

While this is a good idea in general, and forums have (or, can have) such options, like ban from posting for 2 weeks or more, in practice, they work only for users like us.
A newcomer with 1-2 comments, does not care at all for such things, he can easily make a new account and continue to insult or spam.
This is one more reason for suggesting again what i suggested few pages before, as for me, it is crucial:
2 levels of membership. One (with more rights and options) for those who have a customer account with the same e-mail and one (with less rights and options) for the rest. For example, post and comments from those "level 2" users, must be approved first from a moderator. After some time, if the member have a good behavior or become helpful, he can reach the "level 1".

There are already limits in place based on criteria. For example, new users can't post links etc.
I'd be 100% against creating an two tier membership system. Why not just make everyone use an NI account? If you're posting here with problems you already have an account to purchase and download the software you're having problems with. I'd think that it's very rare that you get users coming on here and posting genuine questions if they don't have the software in the first place.
