Second-hand Maschine MK3 – Transfer of Komplete Select 12 for HW and West Africa library

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a second-hand Maschine MK3. The seller initiated the licence transfer, but NI Support informed me that Komplete 12 Select for HW is a non-transferable supplement that remains in the original owner's account. Only the hardware serial number is transferred, and the new owner receives a Komplete 15 Select voucher instead.

I find this policy confusing in practice. The original owner retains the supplement, while the new owner receives a different software offer. This also seems inconsistent with the guidance I understood to apply to second-hand hardware purchases.

I appreciate the voucher, but I specifically wanted the West Africa library for its instruments and sounds. The proposed replacement doesn't resolve that particular issue.

Could someone from NI clarify the current transfer policy and let me know whether there's any way to obtain West Africa, either through an alternative voucher or another arrangement?

Generally policies however is that when you transfer hardware then you get only what is considered as base software when the device were originally registered. Considering that you mention Maschine MK3 then I am actually somewhat puzzled myself since I would have thought that that would have come with only the Maschine software from when it was sold…

This is the official NI policy on the issue:

"Selling Hardware / Software Bundles

Selling a hardware/software bundle (like a Traktor Kontrol S3, Maschine, or Ultimate Kontrol keyboard) is as easy as selling a single software product.

You only have to unregister the hardware in your user account and will receive a License Transfer ID that you can pass to the new buyer. After the buyer has imported the License Transfer ID to their own account, they will receive the same software bundle as you, the original owner.

In short, this means that the seller keeps the software that came with the hardware - and the new owner receives it as well. This way, all potential upgrade paths that are based on that software stay intact.

Please note that there are a few exceptions with older products. For these products, the software license shows a tag that the license has to be transferred to the new user by our Account Support team.

Komplete Select for HW was the bundle software that came with MK3 as the integral part of the product and "(The new owner) will receive THE SAME software bundle as the original owner". It's as simple as that. In previous years, the sellers had no problems transfering those bundled libraries to the new users with help of the NI support. It doesn't seem to be the case and the support denies such transfer. This is not only contrary to their own policy, but is also illogical and confusing as neither the seller nor the buyer can use the once legitimately purchased software anymore.

Well , yes , sorry about my confusion , it would appear that Maschine MK3 comes with Komplete Select , sorry I forgot to double check. But if it ever did not then when registering the device then you will 'only' get what was considered the base software for the device when it were registered first. There is the modification though that with respect to Komplete Select then you always get the present version of Komplete Select , meaning you do not get Select 12 when registering 2nd hand you 'only' get present version (Komplete Seoiect 26) , at present usually delivered as a code to get the Komplete Select from the store.

On the Other hand then unlike with Komplete Select then you 'only' get the version of Maschine software that the device originally came with when registering a secondhand purchase. I think that the logic here is that some older devices might not be supported by newest version of Maschine so you always get the version of Maschine software that the device originally came with.

Yes, correct, Komplete 12 Select for HW that was originally a integral part of the Maschine MK3. I was supposed to receive it from the previous seller exactly as the official NI policy stipulates (see above). Unfortunately, the NI support keeps rejecting our claims and won't transfer the once bundled software to me which makes the software unusable for both of us and deprives me of the part of its library (West Africa) that I was particularly interested in. This is not only highly disappointing, but also contrary to the NI software transfer policy.

This is simply not correct. NI policy for years has been that the 'For HW' are not transferable. Originally buyer keep their 'base software' and buyer get their own version (With respect to Select the new present version)

As an example of NI giving new versions then NI policy in the section "Why is my product "Not transferable?" section of page "Help with Buying or Selling Second-Hand" says :

"For some products like Maschine, we frequently offer supplements like Komplete Select, Komplete Elements, Komplete Selection, etc. If a new Supplement is released, it replaces the former version. You only need to transfer the current supplement version."

Anyway , I am only attempting to explain here , I have no stake in this and also no say. All decisions are NI's I notified someone NI who might clarify better if need be… Else of course it is NI Support that decides what happens.

In the past, new users were granted the rights to the software bundle that orignally came with the maschine upon the purchase, not only the "base software" - I personally know such cases with the last one happening around a year ago. Moreover, if you read the NI policy quoted in my previous posts,

you, as a potential buyer, rest assure knowing that the libraries will be transferred to you. That's why I decided to purchase the second hand gear. If I had known about this issue and all the confusion, I'd have probably given it up and gone for an alternative product or a new one.

@Peniuarek Just to echo what PoorFellow and our Support team have said, the key distinction is between the base product and any supplementary software that came with the hardware.

Under our policy, you’ll receive the base product (Maschine software), but for supplementary software such as Komplete 12 Select, you’ll receive the current version instead.

You can find the details under “Why is my product not transferable?” in this Support article. Hope this clears things up.

My problem has been solved after I'd escalated my case to the NI Senior Support. I have now the full version of Select 12 for HW bundle transferred to my account. Big thanks to the NI Staff for your help and support. Thanks for your attention to this matter.
